Hi Dave, A bit late and don't know whether you received any info on James Roberts but in searching 1881 census for my relation Edith Lydia Vines found the following.
James Roberts born 1827 'Hall Keeper' and Army Pensioner, residing at Brookvilla, Crossbrook Street, Cheshunt where my Edith was a Dom. Servant. Says he was born in Westbury.
Can there be any connection.

David & Susan, in 1841 ages were not exact.

"The ages of people over 15 years old were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Therefore, someone who was actually 24 years would have their age listed as 20, and someone who was actually 27 years old would have their age listed as 25." - notes from 1841 census.

James may have been 54 which is closer to his christening age. Also people weren't so hung up on their ages then. They didn't get pensions. They didn't fill in forms. It wasn't necessary to know exactly how old you were.

BTW, Israel is mistranscribed in 1841.
