Think this might fit if elizabeth Latitia was born in 1843.

Wow - you are amazing RR! Thanks for that. Still no sign of Alfred, alas.....!!

Tracey - I like your idea (good lateral thinking!) but I think I found William A's death in 1890

Yes William Andrew was described as a "stoker" on the birth cert I have for the son William Samuel so I'm sure it's the right family on the census.

Think it unlikely he would've been abroad (in his line of work) for the birth of Alfred. And after William Benjamin (born in Islington), all the later children seem to have been born in West Ham.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 27 Feb 2010 23:18

I cannot find a death for William, i wonder...and i know it a little left of centre (but has happened before) has he left is wife and had another family?

She could have merely said widow as he had left her?

I believe it to be them, there is only 1 Elizabeth Letitia Chesney born according to the BMD!

The batism record is on Ancestry and is part of their London records.

I think the vicar just got a little muddled. Parish's back then were huge and he'd have had a lot of work on his plate!

Hi Tracey, where did you find the baptism records? I'm still fairly new to this and haven't checked any of them on line yet. I take your point about the census records being out but if the baptism you found in 1849 is for Elizabeth and Benjamin (born in 1843 and 1847), the vicar must've been very confused to put those dates in 1833 and 1837! Do you think it's definitely them (in which case you've helped me go one generation further back with their parents) or could the baptism relate to another family?
Thanks for all your help.

I can't find the family either so your not alone RR!!

Don't forget we are talking about 1840s and not a lot of people could read or write!!!!

On the 1871 census William is a Gas Stoker.

Silverbirch

Silverbirch Report 27 Feb 2010 23:07

Hi Rambling Rose, I can't find them on the 1881 census but they are on the 1891 census with Elizabeth Letitia as a widow.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 27 Feb 2010 23:06

No id was required back then, as for the census data, it was commonly wrong...dates get rounded up or down.

The census is a basic tool for helping you find other data, i wouldn't hold onto a 2 yr error too tightly, i have some that are out by 10 years over 3 census's!!

I wonder if they have been mistranscribed in 1881.....

Or could dad have been abroad? Maybe thats why you cannot find a UK BMD entry for Alfred?

Silverbirch Report 27 Feb 2010 23:02

Hi T,

Thanks for that. This dob makes the census entry in 1891 correct where she is a widow and puts her age as 48, but on the 1871 census filled in by William A, she is put down as age 26, which would mean she was born in 1845 (not 43). Strange that her husband didn't know her age when they'd only been married two years and would have needed to show birth certs for the wedding - or not? Strangely I can't find the family on the 1881 census - and no sign of "Alfred" on the other two.

Silverbirch I am not finding the family on census after the 1871...?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 27 Feb 2010 22:58

Looking at the image i think the vicar had made an error.

Looks like they have hung on the baptise Elizabeth and have had her and her brother Benjamin done together.

Her date of birth according to the vicar is 26 Jul 1833! and Benjamin's is 19 Jul 1837

Births Sep 1847
Chesney Benjamin Bermondsey 4 23

Their address simply states 'Workhouse'

P.S. The reason I think the Alfred Charles Birch born in 1869 is prob not the right one is that he doesn't show up in the censuses and I know he didn't die young as he grew up and had a family!

Yes, sorry about the mistake. Children's dates: William Benjamin born 1870 (died 1872), John c1875, Elizabeth c1878, William Samuel 1880, Charles c1884, Samuel Thomas c1887 . I'm sure about the year of birth for William Samuel as I have the birth cert (my grandfather) and I found William Benjamin (birth and death on freebmd). I thought he was probably the first as he was called William (after the father) and then after he died another child was called William (i.e William Samuel) and that Alfred would seem to slot in the gap between the children born in 1870 and then 1875 but I could be wrong - maybe he was an early one born in 1869. Most of my dates above are circa as I think I found them on the censuses so the years may be out by one year.
Re Parents: am not sure of the exact dates of birth (have found inconsistencies in the birth and census records) but I think Eliz Letitia was born around 1843-1845 and William Andrew similar (1843-1846).
