Fresh Pair of Eyes Needed... Appletons, Co Durham

You know how sometimes you have some data in your tree that's been there so long you don't question it any more, and don't even know where you got it from... well that's me! And seems likely I've been barking up a very big tree and got an awful lot of information on someone who's not an ancestor of mine - at least not a direct one!

To cut long story short I now believe that my 3 x great grandfather was a Nicolas Appleton, rather than the Edward I previously believed. However, I'm coming up blank with finding him on any censuses etc.

I have marriage certificate for my 2 x great grandparents, William Turnbull and Elizabeth Appleton (Feb 1875) which shows fathers' names, and Nicholas' occupation as tailor. Both parties were living in South Hetton, Co Durham at time of marriage. Their ages are just listed as "full age" so no clues there for approx DoB of Elizabeth.

However, can't find hide nor hair of Nicholas to check out Elizabeth's siblings and mother's names. Possible sister of Mary Hannah Appleton (witness at wedding) but otherwise drawing blank.

I freely admit it could be a case of not seeing wood for trees as have very much had blinkers on with the "slight" detour I took on my research these last few years (sigh), but any help gratefully received
