Richard Report 19 Jun 2010 15:41

Am trying to find anything on George Brett – father of James (1858) and of George (1849), James appears on the 1881 and 1901 censuses living in Barkingside, James was married in Bethnal Green in 1878 and George is down as his father, other than that I can’t find anything at all. George junior (1849) died in 1915 aged 66 in the Edmonton area.

Rye House, Hertfordshire

Rye House, a very ancient mansion, which stood in the parish of Stansted on the road to Hoddeston, is very much celebrated in the history of England. It was built as a castle by Andrew Ogard in the reign of Henry VI. In the early nineteenth century part of the building (which at that time served as a workhouse to the parish) had both battlements and loopholes, and was likely the gate of the castle .

The house is interesting as it was supposedly the site intended for the assassination of Charles II in 1683. At that time the house was teneted by one Rumbold, a maltster, who had served in the army of Oliver Cromwell. Rumbold was involved in a plot to kill the king and he suggested a plan to his fellow conspirators to assassinate Charles on his yearly visit to Newmarket to watch the races - Rye House being on the road the king would take. Rumbold suggested they overturn a cart on the road by Rye House, forcing the king's carriage to stop, and then fire upon him from the hedges, making their escape afterwards via back lanes.

Fortunately for Charles, the conspirators were caught, and the assassination never eventuated.

Fans

Im not convinced that the name for James father is George.

Take a look at the image it's the first letter thats confusing. Compare it an occupation on the marriage above....

...cant read that either!

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 19 Jun 2010 16:18

Compared to a father George on another marriage on the same page I make it George Gin...

Just more scrawled.

But thanks for making me look again....Sigh

Cant see them on 1871/61/51 though.

Wonder how Richard found out about brother George 1849?

I sent Richard a PM asking about George and why he was thought to be brother to James.

PM

its just an assumption, I have a memorial card for George Brett who died in 1915, it was amongst my dads possessions, my great grandfather was james born in 1858 - so this George is too young to be James' father. As James' father was also George, I assumed it wasnt an uncle either.

hope that makes sense!

sorry Fanny/everyone, I’m relatively new to this (and the etiquette of these boards). You’ve certainly dug out a lot more information than I previously had, it seems my great-grandfather appeared confused at times as to where he was born and when. You certainly have the right James, and the discrepancy of James’ birth might be the reason I haven’t found much on his father. Thanks so much, I’m going to have to try and analyse what I now have and give it my best shot.

Richard

Richard Report 22 Jun 2010 09:10

In the 1911 census James changed his date of birth to 1853, this tallys with a death record on freebmd (1921, barkingside/romford) there are a couple of results of a James being born around Brent Pelham/royston/buntingford/great hornmead (right area, right time) in the 1861 and 1871 censuses – I think they might even have George as father.
