I think John Seal was probably a plain old lodger, presumed by a census worker to be related. There's just no remote connection between Seal and Dore, Dean, Snape, Hughes ...

Unless, now that we have the new names Snape and Hughes, somebody wants to try finding one of his daughters married to one of them. ;)

Dea Report 16 Jan 2011 17:58

Yep - Ja...x - that's what started this all off !!!

I still think it is more likely, given his age, that he is a 'grand-father-in-law'
BUT No-one has been able to tie down the 'Seal' connection !!

The Henry Snape who was comitted would have been about 23 years older than Sarah Elizabeth wouldn't he?

Can't find anything about what happened to Henry Snape but I have found that he was comitted on 25th May for Indecent Assaut on a girl under 12 at Heaton on 29th April, 1871.

He was aged 43 and a Cotton operative.

Since what Robert still really wants is Cyril in 1911, and just in case there's any chance we might find him ... can somebody reproduce the 1911 household with Grace and kids not including Cyril? Jones, it was? No ... I forget!

DORE GRACE 1884 27 Salford
DORE JOHN 1903 8 (he was John Edward)
DORE MARTHA WALKER 1909 2

and Cyril, the kid between John Edward Dore and Martha Walker (not Dore), was missing ...

was it

WOOD WILLIAM 1877 34
WRIGHT FLORENCE MABEL 1908 3
HOUSEHOLD WRIGHT JAMES 1898 13
HOUSEHOLD WRIGHT MARY E 1877 34

? Grace was a boarder ... ?

Right, I was doodling around trying to reconstruct the search from memory -- those are the details as posted by MC below -- just so we know where everybody was. Except Cyril.

Good work on Hughes/Snape/Dean.

Sarah and George in 1881, for info

George Dean 26
Sarah Elizabeth Dean 30
Mary Elizabeth Dean 4
Maud Dean 1
Rebecca Dean

Since Sarah and George married in 1878, Mary might be a Snape, and Sarah was a proper widow when she partnered with George? Or ... she was estranged from Henry but the birth was registered in his name.

Births Dec 1876 ?
SNAPE Mary Elizabeth Salford 8d 35

No death for Henry Snape in the right area, 1875-1878. It would be nice to have his personal info from the marriage certificate. Get out the purse, Robert!

That Henry Snape one was the one I had my eye on Meg. I couldn't find him in 1871 or a death before then but I didn't know about the prison thing. There are quite a few Henry Snape deaths to pick from now but there are a couple in Preston that look promising -

Both born c 1841 - one dies age 32 in 1873 and the other aged 43 in 1884. He would have been 10 years older than Sarah Elizabeth.

Just looked at William Hughes born @ 1816 and Phoebe Hughes
on 1881 census it gives 42,Brighton Street Ordsall Salford on the transcribed entry. The district should be 66>37

When you click on original view it is Croydon street but the Hughes family doesn't show on it.

Wasn't the address on Grace Deans birth Croydon Street.

On Page 1 he said the scan was done and ready to go.

C'mon Robert, I've got work to do (other than FH).

Oh well, it looks like we've "proved" she married Henry Snape, and then George Dean:

Lancs BMD confirms. But I can't find either of them in 1871.

There's a Henry Snape committed to 1 year in prison for attempting carnal knowledge of a girl under 12 - trial May 1871, so might he have been in custody at the time of the census?

Not yet Meg. No sign of him coming back to the thread yet though.
I would like to see it for the same reason as you.
I was going to do some cross checking of her possibly marrying before.
Have to go to lunch now though.
