Potty

Potty Report 26 Feb 2011 12:40

Jacqueline, you will need scotlandspeople if you want to go back any further.

It is a pay to view site (although free to search). You buy credits. You can view and download original images of BMDs - except more recent ones (and baptisms and marriages when you get back before 1855 when civil registration started.)

Scottish records give more info than English ones - death records give parents' names; marriage records give both parents' names; birth records give parents' names and place and date of marriage.

Potty

Potty Report 26 Feb 2011 12:45

There are two births coming up for John Alexander McKay in 1921. It is too recent to view - you would need to buy the cert. Info on how to do so is on the site.

Just a caution, Jacqueline.

The info Eveie posted comes from a family tree at Ancestry, from what I can tell.

It may be well researched and documented. It may also be complete bumph.

You'd need to look at the tree there yourself to see what records the person has to support that information.

With the name Hunter for his mother and in his brother's name, it looks likely, but you never know. It really is much better to get your father's birth certificate for yourself and get all the info on it firsthand.

Surely with such detailed information about your father, the owner of that tree must be somebody known to you?

Nice if you acknowledge Potty's advice, too ....

You can view / download Alexander and Sarah's marriage certificate from Scotlandspeople.

1920 MCKAY ALEXANDER HUNTER SARAH CALTON (GLASGOW) GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 1247

Credits cost £6 for 30. So for a cost of £1.20 can can see the register entry. I have used some credits to give you an example of the detail available on Scottish Marriage entries.

On the Nineteenth November 1920 at 90 Great Hamilton Street, Glasgow by declaration in presence of Alexander McIntyre, Ironmoulder and Mary Donald or McIntyre. Alex'r McKay, aged 27 years Labourer a Bachelor of 43 Lanark Street, Glasgow. His father David McKay, a Slater (retired) and his mother Margaret McKay maiden surname Donlad were both still alive.Sarah Hunter, aged 32 years no occupation given and a Spinster of 150 Waddell Street, Glasgow. Her father David Hunter a Hammerman was still alive and her mother Elizabeth Hunter maiden surname Milloy was deceased. They were married by Warrant of Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire dated 19 November 1920. The marriage was registeed on 19th November 1920 at Glasgow by James Moore, Registrar.

Using the above information you can now look on Scotlandspeople for their births. The birth entries will give you the date and place of the parents marriage. You can then look for those marriages and work backwards from there. Statutory registration began in Scotland in 1855. It is worth noting that Scottish death certificates give the names of both parents including the mother's maiden surname - if the informant knew the details.

Trying to find information regarding the late John Mckay from Warrington. Cheshire. married to Elizabeth. John was a baker by trade and was born in Scotland, Maybe in Motherwell , not sure on this point. However I am trying to find relatives of my great Grandmother, Margaret Messenger, who died in 1888 and is buried in Warrington cemetry. as far as I know , John had a son called Edward McKay. If anyone can help with this enquiry, it would be very much appreciated.

Jean, You would be better to start your own thread as this one is quite old and helpers may not read as far down as your addition to the thread.

Some dates for John McKay would also help.

As for Margaret, which one of these is yours?

Deaths Sep 1888 MESSENGER Margaret 39 Wigan 8c 17
