to buy copies of certificates you use the GRO reference on freebmd and order them through the site http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/

cost £9.25 - NEVER pay more than this. Some other sites charge a lot more

I can't believe you have managed to do your maternal side accurately back to 1500 without buying certificates and in such a short time. It takes most of us years to search parish registers and wait for certificates

Chris - if you want to create an accurate tree you should keep careful records

There were only 3 children born illegitimately - Kathleen (just!) b 1827 & Joyce born after marriage, Joyce was born AFTER Kathleen in 1932

thanks lancashire ann there are no certifcates atll but I understand you can buy old copies?.I have his birthc1878 which makes him 22 when he married clara claxton and 49 when he married sarh elizabeth the only other thing I know about him is that he had a brother who had a geengrocers business in Rotherham, south yorkshire

lancashireAnn Report 8 Mar 2011 14:22

you start with the marriage certificate of Walter & Sarah

with a name like Shepherd you could easily go down the wrong track so need his age & occupation on marriage and his father's name and occupation

there is nothing that can be found on-line to give Walter's age at the time of his marriage and you have no idea where he was born

Christine

Christine Report 8 Mar 2011 14:17

thanks that confirms the marriage at worksop of walter s and sarh eliz. twere my grandparents and at least 4 of the children WERE illegitimate as my dad jack was born aug 1925 and the age of joyce at death i only got from a relative so she was only 1 when she died then came kathleen . now how can I find the parents of Walter which I'm going to try to do when I come back at 5ish.do I start with births in yorkshire?

lancashireAnn Report 8 Mar 2011 14:07

Christine Report 8 Mar 2011 13:46

madbull, now I,m confused again! I,ll try again this is what I have:-

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 8 Mar 2011 13:45

But Christine you said right from the beginning that Sarah Elizabeth was nee Reist but now it's her mother who was nee Reist. However I can't find any marriage for Edward Tanswell nor for Mary Reist.

Christine

Christine Report 8 Mar 2011 13:40

lancashire ann no birth certificates sadly that's the problem but I know for def. that all the children's names are correct and match the right parents chris

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 8 Mar 2011 13:38

Madbull

this is what is confusing me

"In answer to madbulls question about sarah's mother being nee Reist that info was passed on by another family member but not 100% but 98% we have always believed this to be correct. She was married toEdward Tansell c1850. i'm sure they lived in Hull but Mary anne could be from Coventry.I would like to find out more about this"

combined with

"Charlie chapman marries sarah elizabeth tanswell (nee RIEST) in hull 1903 he dies (When?)"

I can't find any Tansell / Reist marriages anywhere between 1845 & 1903 and we do have that birth of Sarah Elizabeth TANSELL in 1885

Christine

Christine Report 8 Mar 2011 13:38

madbull, I have sarah's mum as Mary anne (neeRIEST-this si only info given to me by family not from records) and I think she lived in Hull but don,t know where she was born as ai can't find any info on tthe RIEST family don't you think they are the same sarhs? chris shepherd
