hi folks especially maddie and redbull. Sorry its taken so long, but the information you have given me makes the results of our quest read as follows:-
Walter shepherd marries clara claxton in leeds june 1900 she dies(when?)
Charlie chapman marries sarah elizabeth tanswell (nee RIEST) in hull 1903 he dies (When?)
walter shepherd marries sarah elizabeth in woksop 1927 after several of the children were born!!! but the info all seems legit. now i need to find out more about the chapmans and riests please

from original post
"Sarah Elizabeth Tanswell (neeRiest) Hull? married Charlie Chapman from? Children:- Mary,Doris,Charlie,Phylis,Winnie,Reenie, Maybe from Barton-on-humber."

are you now saying that it was this Sarah's MOTHER who was born Sarah Reist please?

Both the marriages are already posted on p 1

It happened frequently that people did not marry until after children were born. Often the previous husband was still alive at the time they got together and divoerce was tooo expensive for most people

ther are several items people have posted which look positive. the names from madbull alst posted are hot matched they are definately my father's siblings (my dad was definately a jack and not a john).I THINK he was born next, then kathleen. the 2 marriages of charles chapman ans sarahelizabeth Tanswell and Wlater to sarah are the ones I'm searching for. but the walter and sarah 1927 is 2 years after my fathers birth. Did folks really have 4/5 kids in those days before getting married? In answer to madbulls question about sarah's mother being nee Reist that info was passed on by another family member but not 100% but 98% we have always believed this to be correct. She was married toEdward Tansell c1850. i'm sure they lived in Hull but Mary anne could be from Coventry.I would like to find out more about this

I wonder if your father could have been George and used Jack as a nickname? Although Jack is usually a nickname for John. This George's birth was registered Oct/Nov/Dec quarter so could have been born August.

sorry the shepherd family is soooooooo complicated. I have no birth, marriage or death certifictes. firstly Sarah Elizabeth Tanswell ( nee Riest fromHULL ) married Charlie Chapman from???? in1903 in hull .
Walter Shepherd from?? married??( Possibly a clara claxton from leeds (someone - lancashireann has suggested this info.) - she died don't know when.
then Walter Shepherd married Sarah Elizabeth Tanswell probably around 1915-1921 as my dad (jack was born1925 and wasn't the oldest of Walter and Elizabeth's children they had together. The others were, harry, george ,kathleen, Joyce(died 2and a half yrs),Jim
Elizabeth and Charles Chapman' s children were, mary, doris, charlie, phylis, winnie, reenie
Walter and ???????s children were walter, fred, lily, elsie
not sure if this is any cleare than the first posting! but thankyou all those who have sent info (JUST WHERE &HOW DO YOU GET IT & SO QUICKLY) I,ve spent the last hour on gr records and can find nothing positive as ther are so many walter shepherds etc and not knowing there d.o.bs or origins is frustrating. There is only my dad left and I haven't seen him for 41 yrs - he did a runner to Leicester (I'm in Sheffield. The woodhouse info looks promising I'll keep trying but still need help thanks chris shepherd (shep)
