I'm desperately trying to trace relatives of John Stephen McCARTHY born 31/12/1920 in STOKE NEWINGTON, LONDON. He was the son of Patrick Joseph McCARTHY and Elizabeth Isabel McCARTHY (nee TRACEY) and sibling of Anne and Denis?! John died in a light air craft at Elmsdon airport on 15/4/1951. Any info on any of them but particularly John would really be appreciated, it's as though he never existed?!

Kindest regards,

Lynsey

We hear a lot of "desperate" around here. Just so we know, are descendants needed for some specific reason (medical histories, an aging relation who wants to know family), or is it just that you haven't been able to find info and are looking for help?

Do you know whether J S McCarthy married?

If he didn't marry / have children, what kind of information would you be expecting to find? Most people don't leave traces that can be found 60 years after their death, other than their vital records and any documents, photos etc. that their family may have.

I don't see a birth for Anne but ther is one in Hackeney for Denis J.

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Apr 2011 22:11

Denis J McCarthy was born in 1926 in Hackney. Do you know anything about him at all? I don't see a death record to match that name and birthdate. Do you know his middle name?

I don't see the birth of an Anne McCarthy with mother Tracy.

Possibly born elsewhere ... Ireland? No McCarthy-Tracy marriage in England/Wales.

I don't see John's birth either!

A Denis Joseph McCarthy was killed in WWII, but he was slightly too old and had different parents.

John isn't at FreeBMD -- oh, here's why. Ancestry did fuzzy search.

Name: John S Mccarthy
> Mother's Maiden Surname: Tresay
Date of Registration: Jan Feb Mar 1921
Registration district: Hackney
Registration county: Greater London
Volume Number: 1b
Page Number: 653

I wonder whether that would find us a marriage ...

FreeBMD has mothers maiden name as Tradey for the birth of John

John Stephen McCARTHY was the father of my uncle who is now 61. He didn't ever meet his dad and was a year old when his dad died in an aircraft accident . My uncle's mother remarried and effectively erased John McCARTHY, including the surname from my uncle's life. He has had no contact, written or verbal with his dad's side during his life and has no photographs of his father so has never known what he looked like. I'm hoping to be able to trace descendants of John Stephen McCARTHY's siblings Ann and Dennis in the vain hope that they can share family info and any photographs they may have. My uncle has tried over the years to trace his family with no success. I too have tried all my usual methods with a negative result and I'm not sure where to try next?! John Stephen MCCARTHY married my uncle's mother in 1948 in one of the home counties. I'm hoping the board will help, many thanks.

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Apr 2011 22:25

I'm afraid I don't know what a home county is, but this must be the marriage.

Name: John S Mccarthy
Spouse Surname: Green
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1948
Registration district: North Cotswold
Registration county (inferred): Gloucestershire
Volume Number: 7b
Page Number: 1028

Can you tell us how you know about his siblings, and anything else you can tell about them? They're not getting found, in terms of a birth for Anne or death for Denis.

Do you have John's birth certificate and marriage certificate? Confirmation of his mother's correct name would be useful.

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Apr 2011 22:31

So it's Joseph not Patrick Joseph McCarthy
and Elizabeth I Tracey not Tracy
per the marriage record.

If you can tell us the sources of your information, and what certificates you do and don't have, it could be very useful.

Witnesses to the 1948 marriage, for instance, might tell us something.

Hello All,

Thank you, I'm really astounded at how quick the replies are! Yes that's the marriage. I know my uncle had to change his surname from McCARTHY to GREEN when sent to live with his grandmother 'Ma Green'. And yes they're the births for him and death for him in Warwickshire. I don't have his birth certificate in front of me, but the spelling was given to me as 'Tracey'. An alternative spelling would explain why I couldn't find her though I'd have never got 'Tresay'. Perhaps they all moved out to Essex where Elizabeth died (if she's the correct one?!). I just need to find Denis or Ann. Apparently my uncle has a look of Uncle Dennis so Dennis must've lived until at least thirty'ish?! The info about John's sibling comes from my uncle though he never met them they were obviously discussed briefly in the family. Thanks once again I know my uncle will be over the moon with whatever info he receives.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Apr 2011 22:37

The "Tresay" seems to be a mistranscription. The birth certificate will have the correct version.

Your opening post spells the name TRACY although your last one says TRACEY. Do you want to edit the first one just so it's straight from the outset?

I'd get hold of the Eileen L McCarthy birth certificate. "Ann" may be something misremembered.

There are two marriages for that name in Essex in 1939. One is to Shambrook, but I can't find a matching death. One is to Martin, and without a full (middle) name and exact date of birth (both from the birth certificate) it would be next to impossible to identify a death.

Lynsey Report 8 Apr 2011 22:45

The only certificates I'm aware of are a birth, death and marriage certificate for John Stephen MCCARTHY. I'm sorry I don't have the marriage one in front of me for witnesses. Can I confirm that John may have had older siblings? Eileen L McCARTHYand is the Tracey bit her mother's maiden name or is it included as her middle name?). The death for Patrick Joseph seems to fit in essex. I'm sure the birth certificate records his dad as Patrick Joseph not Joseph alone?!

Births Dec 1884
TRACEY Elizabeth Isabella Shoreditch 1c 45

So the death I posted earlier looks bang on.

edit -- a GR member has Elizabeth Tracey 1885 Shoreditch in their tree -- definitely her, I'd say, there's no other matching birth.
