On the birth of Isaac Denton's children it just has James Denton, sorry if I have missed something but where has the middle name of Shaw come from?-j

ARSTEE

ARSTEE Report 9 May 2011 18:44

Can't find him under that name anywhere either !!

ARSTEE

ARSTEE Report 9 May 2011 16:12

Just looked at it again and realised that even though he's listed as James in the 1841 census, his birth is down as Jim Shaw Denton.......

ARSTEE Report 9 May 2011 15:50

WHAT I WROTE ON PAGE 2 -

I have however after getting into it last night tried to narrow down James's from kirkheaton / Dalton / Lepton area.

I found 3, 2 of which are fully traceable. One however is missing after the 1841 census. He belongs to Henry & Elizabeth. Henry's father as far as I can see is listed as John - Isaac's father is listed as Jonathan ??

However there is a death in 1844 of a James in that area but it doesn't give an age obviously so I can't see any other way round but to order that death :o(

Now we know that death is for someone else - where did this missing James go to then I wonder ??

I found his birth on familysearch and found him on the 1841 census but then in the 1851 census his family is there but not him ...........

ARSTEE Report 9 May 2011 15:40

Hi everyone,

Been out and about entertaining my little man but just got home and the postman has brought me that little book of Kirkheaton burials.

Interesting............

I said previously that I had found 3 James Dentons from that area, 2 I could account for and 1 that was missing after the 1841 census. I think it was Henry & Elizabeth's son. Anyway, I'd seen a death in 1844 with no age to it so was un-sure if it was him or not. The book tells me that that James was 53 - so, it's not him !!!

What does everyone think ??

Also my theory on James giving Thomas's details in the 1871 census could also be correct ?? I said there was a death of a Thomas up there in 1864. The book tells me he was 34 years old - making him born in 1830 - the same as my Thomas !!!

Are things looking up ??

Thank you for all being busy while I was galavanting around the pet shop, the park and feeding the ducks :o) x x x

Hi Janet,

Sneinton is Close to St Mary.

Thanks Dea

Sorry I have missed it. -didn't mean to go over old ground.
Just another snippet is that in 1864 a Thomas Denton was fined 10shilling for being drunk and he came from Sneinton. It could have been this William's son or it could have been the Hudds Thomas Denton. Looking at the census there are only these two possibilities. Is Sneinton far from St Marys?-jl

I have posted details on that couple somewhere Janet. - I will go and take a look.

Dea x

EDIT - Yep - towards the bottom of the first page Janet.

William was born in Wakefield, Yorks.

I have them on 1851 in Barker Gate which is the address given on George's birth cert in 1853 (maybe not the same house, but the same area).

We have been unable to connect them though?

On a slightly different note I have looked at the other Dentons in Notts and found on the 1841 William Denton from out of county.
He married a Rosetta Corthern on 13th Dec 1825 at St Mary's Nottingham. I cannot find them on the census after 1841 ,( that may be the search facility), but Rosetta Denton turns up in an Alms house in 1871 still in St Marys.
Has anyone the facility to find out where William Denton came from. He also names his son Thomas Denton which may be coincidence. Just wondering whether this William Denton may also have come from the Huddersfield area .jl

Hi Arstee,

Glad you had a good weekend.

Well, we have LOTS of theories but none of us have got any further I am afraid !!!

I think there must be a big black hole somewhere !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We will get there in the end though <3

Good morning all :o)

Hope you've all had a good weekend !!

Hubby is now packed off for the week with a bag of clean clothes and an even bigger bag of food :o) and my little man is still snoring his head off in bed - blissfull quiet it is down here :o)

Janet - interesting point you made there...... he could of fathered Alice, married Sarah, found out about Alice, moved somewhere with Martha, fathered George, decided he missed Sarah, moved back and fathered Lewis ?? It happens nowadays so why not then ???

Wendy - thanks loads for checking that, I've looked and yes, I can see the marriage to William you mention and I think you'll probably be right about it being that one.

That leaves yet another question un-answered -

Where is Matha's death - not Nottingham !!

I can't believe that none of us have got anywhere with this, it verges on the un-believable !!!

Alice and George are missing for 20 years of their life....
James and Martha are missing for ALL of theirs.......
Thomas goes missing for the last part of his life ..........

Roll on Alice's birth cert - lets hope it holds a clue !!

Hi,

I have checked my disc of Burials and found Martha Briggs buried at St Marys Church 6 May 1859 aged 38yrs of Norfolk St. As it a church yard I wont be able to find if there is anyone else in the grave sorry about that not much help to you really. Be careful she could have been the wife of a William Briggs

Piece of advice, Instead of sending for a certificate from the General Register office web site, try the local register office for where its registered as they will check the certificate first to check its the right one then its up to you if you want to buy it. For example the James and Sarah if one of the names is wrong that you asked for they will tell you its wrong but wont tell you what is not the certificate. Hope this makes sense to you.

I know it is disappointing about the marriage cert of James and Sarah but they may send the one with James and confirm his father is Isaac. It is certainly an interesting enquiry. I keep thinking that he may have lived a double life.....was he a gemini? - lol- Why didn't James and Sarah have any children in Huddersfield until Lewis came along in 1856. It easy to think that James lived in Hudds all the time but a lot could happen in 10 years. Suppose he was the father of Martha Briggs's baby and didn't know until he was engaged to Sarah Turner. Once engaged a man couldn't change his mind without risking a court case. -jl

ARSTEE Report 7 May 2011 07:42

Hi all - good morning

well,nothing last night.

I was looking at poss Thomas marriages - between 61 & 71. I got

Lockwood & Ward Dewsbury 1868
Stott & Womersley Halifax 1869
Holt & Petch Halifax 1870

I tried to match William 1856 & Thomas 1859 to those surnames in both the 1861 and 1881 but, nothing flew out at me !!

I'm beginning to wonder if 'Thomas' was really Thomas or was it James using his ID ?

Think there is something dodgy about James, if that's his real name as he's evaded a paper trail too much

Why would Thomas who's been a weaver all his life suddenly be a labourer when Nottingham was full of FWK - he could of easily been able to turn his hand to that in one of the many many factories there ?

James has always (apart from Georges marriage cert) been a labourer.

Where's James death - not Nottingham
Where's Thomas's death - not Nottingham - there is an option for 1864 in Huddersfield though ?

Too many un-answered questions and loose ends (and beginnings) What a family !!!

So, hubby is home in an hour and as he works away all week (HGV driver) I really ought to spend some time with him so no more looking for me this weekend :o(

Have a good one everybody x x

Hi

Yes ages should be on burial records but sometimes the odd one missing depends on how well they have been kept.

Well I'm off now my battery on my netbook is about to run out.
Good night
