Hi I am trying to locate information on a Mary Ann Harries born 1875/6 in Cardigan. she had 4 children David, Benjamin (my grand father), Margaret Ann and Gwilam Albro. I have some information on the family i.e. the children were all born at the St Dogmeals workhouse. Can anyone help with what happened to them? any descendants?
Many thanks for all help.

Hello Linda - was Harries her maiden or married name?
Also, as for descendants - have you searched trees on this site for matches?

Cardigan Workhouse
This institution, which is some way from the town, in fact across the river in St Dogmael's, was built in 1839/40 for the relief of the poor, needy and unfortunate of the district, following the passing of the infamous Poor Law Amendment Act in 1834. The building, intended to accommodate 120 inmates, was designed by William Owen of Haverfordwest. The workhouse layout followed the popular cruciform or "square" design, with its entrance block facing north-east. There were separate entrance doors for males and females. The building, marked as Castle Albro on the OS map, is now privately owned.

Hello you lovely people-thank you ever so much for all the fabulous information supplied so far you are gradually breaking down the 'brick walls' that I have been encountering. I have managed to get the children's dates of birth from the workhouse records as follows:- 1) David John-7/11/1895. 2 records in WW1 of PTE in Welsh reg and SRG in Warwick reg. We think the first would be hiim as he appeared to die in 1915. the latter in 1918. How can I verify this? 2) Benjamin -7/7/1899 -my grandfather who ran away from home and joined the army we think it was the South Staffs who ended up in India where he died in 1948. 3) Margaret Ann - 27/7/1903 - records from workhouse don't show her after 1905?? 4) Gwillam Albro - 21/5/1906. - records from workhouse don't show him again.
The last time Mary Ann lived at the workhouse was from 31/8/1907-11/11/09 when David was with her and he was finally discharged presumably because he would be considered able to manage on his own aged 14 ?? joined the army.
Mary Ann's parents were Benjamin and Ann nee Elias - he was a blacksmith so the information from 1871, 1881 1891 seems to be the correct track.
Re Margaret Ann being fostered makes sense and now I need to follow up those two leads along with anything on Gwillam.
My sincere apologies for the lengthy message-I wanted to make sure I kept everyone in the loop-new to this business and am finding out how things work. Thank you all again for your brilliant work and help. <3 <3 <3 Linda Roberts

PM from Linda:
Hello MarieCeleste, we think she never married - we heard third hand that she worked as a domestic in a large house from whence she seemed to disappear every so often to have her children-not even sure if the father is the same for all four. Also third hand there seems to have been a gardener who worked in the same area who may the father?? As you can see this is quite a puzzle-which my 83 year old mother desperately wants to find answers to.
Thank you again for all the valuable leads.

Thank you again for all the effort. For my part, I have logged a phone call with the registrar of BMD covering the Llanelly and Swansea areas to check if the two Mary Ann Harries as having died in the Oct/Nov/Dec 1913 quarter to see if we can check the date of birth and thereby confirm which one is my great grand mother- personally, I think the younger one as third hand we were told she was killed by a train whilst seeing her son Benjamin off to war. I make her age as 40 not 35 as shown - possible as they did not always give the correct information. Will keep digging and keep you informed of any developments. Linda
