i have information on William James Coombes (my Gr Grandfather) was married to Sarah ann Briggs in 1907, his Father was John William coombes who was deceased by 1907. when looking at my grandmothers birth certificate instead of william james it has john william. This is another name in my family tree that ive come to a stand still with. I cant get any further than my Gr Grandfather, i heard from older relatives that they were from highgate but can not get any confirmation.

I'm not sure why you think your great-grandfather was William James rather than John William? Is this from your grandmother's marriage cert?

I too can't see anything about your Grandmother? Might be my age of course!

I assume your grandmother's birth cert has Sarah Ann Coombes formerly Briggs as the mother ... is that correct?

We still need your grandmothers name and DOB

Ille start from what ive got. My Grandmother Laura Coombes was Born 19 march 1907 to John William Coombes and Sarah Formally Briggs. John was a labourer at the soap factory.
In January 1907 William James Coombes married Sarah ann Briggs at the register office in West Ham they were 26 & 24. their fathers names were John William Coombes and William Briggs.
I also have a Continuous certificate of discharge book .in this book the name is John William Coombes. the first date is 1910, and the last date in this book is 1913. this is why its all confusing.

Perhaps the 1911 original reads aged 2 not 7 if this is John William's birth

Births Dec 1908 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coombes John William - W. Ham 4a 117

Be interesting to know if young John William's father was named as John William or William James.

Written at the top of 1911 census image posted by Helen above says John William Coombes, birthplace, West Ham, Essex, messy image (red pen line going through John).

"Continuous certificate of discharge book", isn't this something to do with Navy?...(after looking on google).

Chris :)

(just to add from a search for another member before, occ. Printer written on a Cert. can sometimes be mistaken for Painter)

yes its the merchant navy. he was a trimmer in1910 started at plymouth to places all around the world. By 1912 he was a fireman and trimmer. In 1913 he didnt complete his voyage. thats what the stamp mark says. i dont know why that is.

Hi,

Think you can rule out John William Coombs (b 1860, Canterbury),in Mike's post.

He is my 2nd Great Grandfather, married Rebecca Ann Madams..

Lineage descends into New Zealand....
