Kevin, I have no idea whether or not it was usual practice for National Service personnel to be given their medical records or for them to produce their birth certificates at that time. I have heard men say they were called up for National Service which indicates the Government had a data base to work from. My suggestion is that you look in your local telephone directory for the British Legion local branch and see if someone will look at the record with you and glean whatever information you can.
If you know where your father was based, the regiment etc and if he served abroad and where there are military websites which may produce more information.

Hi chrissiex, on the Barrow website the date of burial and place of death, Barrow, are given but no date of death. I am thinking there may be a more than usual delay between dates of death and burial. As place is Barrow it cannot be the one of taking a body across the county boundary. Perhaps there was an inquest?
I saw both the Wolstanton (Staffordshire) and Durham births neither of which, of course, is Derbyshire. There is a link missing in the original story. Did John Thomas (Jack) move:
1)from place of birth to Barrow
2) from Barrow to Derby (ie he worked in Derby)
3) from Derby to Barrow
I was trying to find Census close to year of birth before returning to searching birth and death records.

here is a marriage in the right place

my money by the way is on Beatrice 1914 ( 1913 ) being the mother of Leon 1937

Beatrice May Davie died 2004 Leicestershire

she married in Loughborough in 1938 and had three children

I see probable marriages for the two girls in Leicestershire but can't see details ... I've figured out one of them ... four kids ... one of them is a member of genesreunited

I'll send you all those details privately just so you can store them away in case

Perchino

Perchino Report 17 Nov 2011 21:42

On the Barrow website there is a burial of:

John Thomas Stevenson
7 December 1944
Aged 48
Burial number 1418

Is this Jack, Leonard's father?

Not finding a death registered in December 1944.
Not an obvious war death.

Kevin, are you able to go to the cemetery and see if there is a headstone to the grave? Inscription would be useful.

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 17 Nov 2011 21:36

I think it's a very interesting possibility :-)

as may have been mentioned though ... how to tell whether it is the right person? with no father's name ...

if the birthdate were right but for the year that would certainly be almost a clincher

the name Jack Stevenson on the marriage certificate I would not put too much store in if Leonard's parents were not married ... it could have been his father's real given name but not surname for instance, people did that all the time, he may even have thought his father was the Stevenson

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 17 Nov 2011 21:34

the George Bradley Stevenson household in 1911 is in

Thorpe Acre And Dishley Garendon,? Loughborough,? Leicestershire,? England

and there are also two households in the same place in 1911 with the surname BRADLY STEVENSON

headed by a Samuel 1860 and a John 1868

they are also children of James B Stevenson and Mary ( married 1856 ) in the 1871 census

there is a Leonard William 1904 in one of thoe families so it seems to have been a family name

( I would suspect that James was the son of an unmarried Ms Stevenson and his father a Bradley )

Hi Chrissie,
Yes its possible, only one way to find out. I will have to get a copy of Leon B Stevensons birth cert, if only to eliminate him. He was born in the village where i still live.

Births Mar 1897
Stevenson Leonard Bradley Loughbro' 7a 136

died 1978 Leicestershire ( I don't have a sub to see details, but born 1897 )

what I am wondering is whether Leon 1937 was called Leonard as suggested and was a child of his daughter or younger sister

1911 household

BRADLEY STEVENSON GEORGE 1870 41 Loughborough Leicestershire
BRADLEY STEVENSON ANNIE 1877 34
BRADLEY STEVENSON LEONARD 1897 14
BRADLEY STEVENSON EMMA 1900 11
BRADLEY STEVENSON FRANCIS 1902 9
BRADLEY STEVENSON GEORGE 1907 4
BRADLEY STEVENSON FLORRIE 1909 2
and
Births Mar 1914 - STEVENSON Beatrice M / Brewin Loughbro 7a 251
Births Mar 1917 - Stevenson Harold /Brewin Loughbro 7a 189

I seem to have accidentally deleted George's marriage from my other post

Marriages Sep 1895
Bradley-Stevenson George Loughbro' 7a 241
Brewin Annie Loughbro' 7a 241
Stevenson George Bradley Loughbro' 7a 241

the name starts out in 1856, marriage of James Bradley Stevenson in Ashby de la Zouch
after that, several marriages in Loughborough 1882-1895, one Nottingham 1900, who must be his children

Marriages Jun 1938
Davie James F Stevenson Loughbro' 7a 459
Stevenson Beatrice M B Davie Loughbro' 7a 459

Marriages Mar 1930
Bradley Stevenson Florence Clarke Loughbro' 7a 218
Clarke Ernest A Bradley Stevenson Loughbro' 7a 218
Stevenson Florence B Clarke Loughbro' 7a 218

could Beatrice have been the mum of Leon before marrying ?

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 17 Nov 2011 20:39

edit, you posted while I was working on all this :-)
so it probably isn't relevant now but I'll leave for now it just in case

I don't like posting things about possibly living people, but it can be removed if wrong ... for children of unmarried parents it can be lucky to check the list on the page

Births Sep 1937
Stevenson Leon B Stevenson Barrow S. 7a 243
Bradley-Stevenson Leon B Bradley-Stevenson Barrow S. 7a 243

that one is a little unusual ! it looks like a classic double-barreled name where the first part is alternately given as an initial

usually a double registration is done under the mother's surname and the father's surname but in this case it seems to be both the mother's surname, different forms of the same name

the name Bradley-Stevenson itself is unique to Loughborough

George died 1949

the births in Loughborough 1923 onward have various mothers' surnames
Brooks
Chambers
Coulson
... the marriages probably show as Stevenson ... yes for example

Marriages Dec 1922
STEVENSON Frederick J B Coulson Loughborough 7a 304
Coulson Lois E Stevenson Loughbro' 7a 304

Marriages Sep 1932
Chambers Olive A Stevenson Loughbro' 7a 447
Stevenson Arthur B Chambers Loughbro' 7a 447

and well hmm :-)

Marriages Mar 1923
Brooks Margaret Stevenson Loughbro' 7a 211
> > Stevenson Leonard B Brooks Loughbro' 7a 211

the Leon birth is 4th of eight 1923 to 1948

someone here at genesreunited has some of those Bradley-Stevensons in their tree, seems to be descended from the 1923 birth

also there are numerous births with mother's surname Bradley-Stevenson starting 1921, surnames
Styles
Wright
Mitchell
Clarke
and I won't list the later ones, one in 1945 has the surname and mother's surname the same

I don't see a marriage or death for Leon B Stevenson or Leon Bradley-Stephenson or see him on the electoral roll recently under either name

if his mother was unmarried I wonder whether his father was Jack but not Stevenson ?

Hi all
Thanks to everybody for there help.
Wells step family prety sussed now, spoken to my mum and Jack Stevenson as on marriage cert is Leonards real dad. That should be Derby link, just got to find one that matches age range? Only document with Leonards DOB on, army medical card 16/6/1936. Im still told his real dad died young?

Hi rootgatherer,
Your geography is pretty good! I certainly would not rule out Melton Mowbray as a possibility. A clue on occupations would give help, guidance and support for change of location.
But my inclination is Derby is a red herring.
Edit:
Re above Jack could be John.

Flip Report 17 Nov 2011 12:31

Not sure if this is correct, but may be worth checking out. There is a marriage 22/5/1961 for Leonard Stevenson on the link MarieCeleste gave. It shows him as 24, a boot and show operative, father Jack (deceased), and gives his address as 5 The Retreat, Barrow upon Soar.

There is also a christening for a child in 1964 on the same site.

All the girls in that family married so any children would not be Stevensons.

John William married in 1913 and died in 1953 still living in Leicestershire.

Frank died in Leicestershire in 1990.

John William Stevenson had 2 daughters. One died in 1990 unmarried. This could be the death of the other daughter but English geography not my strong point so not sure how near this is to Barrow.

Now this could be a co-incidence. I am thinking that if Leonard was brought up by family, he was maybe not officially adopted.

Could this be a second marriage for Gertrude's brother?
