TRying to place Gertrude. There is no birth registered for Gertrude Louisa Cooke to fit the age given on her death. So I wondered if. in fact her marriage to Mr. Smith was actually her third as she was 44 years old when she married Mr. Denby. Not impossible for a first marriage to be later in life of course.

Marriages Mar 1928 (>99%)

ALLEN David Leak Loughbro' 7a 183
COOKE Tommy Wells Loughbro' 7a 183
LEAK Violet M M Allen Loughbro' 7a 183
WELLS Gertrude L Coke Loughbro' 7a 183

Births Dec 1901 WELLS Gertrude Louisa Nottingham 7b 304

HOUSEHOLD WELLS GERTURDE LOUSIE F 1902 9 Loughborough Leicestershire

I don't have a sub to see who she is living with. Can someone check for me please? It may be a waste of time but I am trying to see if there is a Stevenson connection with her.

Kevin, back to basics. Exactly what official documentation do you have showing the dob as 16/06/1936?
So far rootgatherer's find of Leon's birth is the closest and a pressie of the certificate is the answer!
Life for a single mother 1936/1937 was very different from now and it may be that your father's mother was sent to stay in Derby before/after the birth to avoid local scandal. For certificate purposes Derby could well be a "red herring".
Did John William Smith work in Derby at some stage? Do you know if he was employed in (say) engineering (Rolls Royce, Railways etc)? Knowing his occupation could provide more leads.

Well as I have quite a few acquaintances, no, several friends and family born before 1930 who are still with us, I wasn't too surprised that there wasn't a death before 2005.

EDIT

Just wondering Kevin, if he was illegitimate and you don't know his mother's name how will you know when you find the correct birth certificate? I suppose you could then search for a death for his mother in the time scale that you have.

Personally, I would ask someone to splash out the £9.25 for Leon's birth certificate as a Christmas pressie! Even if only to eliminate him.

rootgatherer Report 16 Nov 2011 21:26

Just as a by the way, there is no marriage showing on Ancestry for Leon B Stevenson - of course he may not have married or even emigrated.

Thanks MarieCeleste. I was trying to cope with a driver malfunction, a post and a telephone call all at the same time. Known as multi-tasking!

Perhaps the step-parents are on that site.

Perchino, I hope you don't mind me re-posting your link as the one above didn't work:

http://www.leicestershirevillages.com/barrowuponsoar/availablechurchandbu.html

Kevin, if you follow that link, it's the Register which Perchino listed and is at the very bottom of the page. It opens as an Excel spreadsheet. You will find what may be some useful contact info within the record.

Yes it is a possibility even if he was known as Leo.

Perchino Report 16 Nov 2011 19:47

I saw that birth rootgatherer, wondered if he was called "Len" and Leonard would be the first assumption.
Perhaps the Death Certificate would give more clues.
