Very quick post! There is a Registration District of Shardlow, on the east side of Derby, which also covers parts of Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire and the Leicestershire borders.Have you looked for Leonard's birth in Shardlow?
I can look this evening if no-one else has.

PM (these people will be deceased by now, so see no harm in posting):

Hi Jan,
Mum told me he came from Derby with his dad and the woman who became his stepmum as a baby. His dad died young? And his stepmum found another partner, her name was Gertrude Louisa Smith, dont know maiden name, his name was John William Smith. They were said to have married in the 40s, cant find that either? And they lived in Barrow Upon Soar Leicestershire, as do i, these people brought him up but at some point told him they wernt his parents. I only started to look after he died. Could someone checkout Ancestry site? Thanks Kevin

hi Keven I got your private message, generally better just to put info in the thread ...

you say you have contacted family of the Stevenson Stubbs birth and you are sure that is not your Leonard ... so I will delete the info about that from my posts here so as not to confuse and not to post that personal info about an unrelated person :-)

chrissiex Report 13 Nov 2011 23:07

you say

'The birth cert we have has been found to be someone elses details'

since that person may be living too I suppose it would not be wise to post those details but can you not let everybody in on what you know ?

what year and place was that birth ?

how do you know it was someone else's details ?

[ deleted info about the Stevenson Stubbs birth that Kevin says is not the right one ]

Kevin are you searching on Ancestry without a subscription so you can't see the year ?

freebmd where Mike got the record above is free

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

I don't see a Leonard Stevenson birth in Derbyshire anytime 1930 to 1940 ... anytime after 1922 at all ...

where and when did your parents marry ?

yes it would be very wise to check their marriage certificate, unless you know what it says ( even if it does not name his father ) then you don't have the information you need

Yes mums still around, cant remember if it said his dads name or deceased? Mum only tells me what she knew from relatives of hers but there all gone now. Maybe army records will help? Dont know what else to try?

Would it help to have it do you think? If you are really stuck sometimes this is what you have to do. You do not say what info you have been given by your mother, or if she is still around to ask.

Kevin, you say 'late dad' but can't see his death record. When did this take place?

Was he married to your mother? Just wondering if he named his father on the cert.
If her was given away he might well have been illegitimate, or born under another name, which is what you are thinking I imagine.
I guess you know of no siblings?

Hi
Im trying to find a birth record for my late dad, Leonard Stevenson he was using 16/6/1936 we were told he was born in Derby. He did his national service using that DOB, but cant find a record to match. The birth cert we have has been found to be someone elses details, Did he need to show one for national service? He has to be registered somewhere? As a baby he was given away, whatever? Brought up in Leicestershire, i will get a copy of his service records. There is a record in Derbyshire on Ancestry for Leonard J Stevenson, but dont know if it is right year? We think Stevenson was his dads name as to his mum who knows? Maybe i will never know who he really was, let alone his parents or where he came from? Thanks Kevin
