Who was listed as her father on 1874 marriage cert?

You seem to be writing with quite an element of doubt, what facts do you actually KNOW about Alice?

We could do with starting with known details and then building up a picture from there.

Thanks to all. I was busy typing up the reply to the first reply (Tracey) which covers some of the other responses:

Working backwards, I have a letter from Alice Donkin to her sister Hannah Newman nee Lowndes, my greatgrandmother, just before Alice’s death.

Samuel Birks Donkin married Alice Cosbie during the 3rd Qtr of 1874 at Stone, Staffordshire. I do not have the marriage certificate as, in view of the fact that in 1871 in Sussex Alice Crosbie of Salt, Staffordshire was a widow. So the Crosbie connection is reasonably certain.

1861 is missing completely, I cannot even find her brother and his family after much “walking up and down the census route” for 1861 and 1871. Johns Lane was newly built just before the census and, although it is on the 1861 enumerator’s list, there is no matching page. Furthermore, it would have been the last page of his district 21 and this page is full with no double line indicating the end of the house or district.
Barnabas Lowndes, Alice’s brother, had a baby girl named Alice Elizabeth who was born just before the census. In the letter to her sister Hannah Newman Alice mentions that Alice Elizabeth had been staying and in the 1881 census Alice Elizabeth Lowndes (Lounds on the census) is a visitor at the Donkin household in Longton, Staffordshire.

So all facts point to Alice Lowndes marrying a Crosbie then Samuel Donkin.

The uncertainty is whether or not the Alice Lowndes in the 1851 census for Staffordshire General Infirmary is the same Alice Lowndes.

I have searched for all entries for Alice (no surname) born in Salt 1830 to 1832 but came up with nothing.

Thanks Tracey for the marriage detail in Kent. I did find that one but semm to remember tracing John and Alice Crosbie to a later census which ruled it out. However, another search won't do any harm.

In fact, thanks Tracey and Choccy it does look like the right marriage Alice's father was Barnabas and Sandon is almost linked to Salt.
