Please may i ask for help and assistance in finding Henry Tilsley of Lancashire. England, a labourer. Henry had one daughter that i am sure of called Ann(e) born c, 1829 who married William Buck.

For info, marriage gives her address as Scarisbrick, and she gives her pob as Scarisbrick on all census after her marriage.

I cant see this being the correct entry patchem as the surname is not Tilsley

Can you please explain why you are posting Disley when the surname i am enquiring about is Tilsley

Hi Mark,

We are all struggling to find Ann daughter of Henry in the right area - no baptism for Ann and no death for Henry, etc.

So the next steps may be - was Ann a stepdaughter? Was she unsure of her father's name? Was the surname mistranscribed someshere along the line? Were there some parish registers in the area that have been lost?

Or, was Ann literate, and if not, did someone mishear her surname? In which case d and t are often misheard for one another, as are b and v [EDIT - and in English the "l" is often referred to as "dark" - which I think means somewhat hidden by the sounds of the other letters in the word]

So it would be useful to consider Patchem's entries and to check whether these can be matched to some other family - if not, then they will be a possible for your family.

(I was searching under Til*s*l*y, which produced quite a few hits for Tildsley - but I am not from the area, so I do not know how easily Tildsley may be misheard for Tilsley)

Mark, if the marriage off the Lancs OPC site is your only source of info, it may well be a mistranscription as patchem and Ivy have suggested above.


You need to buy her marriage cert, or a birth cert of one of her children, to see what her maiden name is shown as.


On the Lancs BMD site there are several Buck births listed with mother's maiden name TINSLEY.

But you will need certificates to back any of this up.

The above family were living at the same address (Black Moss Lane) in 1841.

No Anne with them, but at age 13 (if this is her family) she may well have been working away from home as a servant by then.
