My distant Catholic relations were christened and recorded in latin, the unusual christian names even appears on the census

Looks like they were Catholics which explains the use of Latin.

Ah... so it meant John , MOTHER Ann Wilson , not MARRIED Ann.

So the marriage of Parents John and Ann was in 1820 and son John born 1822

Ho Sorry I got date wrong. Joais Goring M Annae Wilson and had sons Joais Brn 1822 and Peter brn 1830 an Jacob 1821 . Joais is not English it is mainly Portugese.

On Ancestry and on Family Search I have found two different spellings for the same person-

John Goring Married Ann Wilson
Brn Ribchester 1822

And

Joais Goring M Annae Wilson
Brn 1822 Ribchester

Wonder why this should be? :-S
