Please can anyone confirm that the Census for 1901 Caterham, Surrey (Godstone), was destroyed or lost...

Hi Jonesey, I have spent best part of 6 years looking for my Paternal Grandfather William John Laker and his spouse Elizabeth Ann nee Green on this particular Census..no joy apart from the 1911 Census..

The Children born before this time are Mary Ann Elizabeth Green 27th January 1896 ( daughter of Elizabeth Ann nee Green unknown father as per birth cert.) but later took the surname of Laker on the 1911 Census( all found on the 1911 Census living at 80, Commonwealth Road, Caterham, Surrey). born 5 Flint Cottages,London Road, Caterham, Surrey.

Elizabeth Fanny Laker 19th April 1899 3, Merstham Terrace, Coulsdon Road, Caterham, Surrey..have birth certificate

James Edward Laker have birth certificate 2nd March 1901 9, Purley Road, Croydon, Surrey, should be with Mother Elizabeth Ann nee Green/Laker and her parents Edward Green and Mary Ann nee Quittenton who found easily enough on the 1901 Census, no sign of them..James died in 17th February 1902.James is the only one I have a baptism for same as death date...have birth certificate.

All other siblings were born between 1903 - 1913, James was still listed on the 1911 Census, although confirmed by Death Cert. that he had died 17th February 1902 6, Clifford Road, Penge..

If you can double check the 1901 Census for me would be so grateful, another pair of eyes maybe will pick something up I missed...

thank you

thank you to all who have given their time, back to researching again, and double checking all Certificates etc., hoping to visit the Surrey History Centre again in October and look through records for the Caterham Valley Primary School, might just find something there...

That's really interesting as I've always wondered how my husband's family ( Nash, Godstone) had all gone missing in 1901. Perhaps part of the Caterham census is missing? They were also in Beechwood Rd.

Just an idea but is there another place in the country which is spelled or sounds simila? We know that so many mistakes have occurred due to unfamiliarity with UK places. It could have been transcribed but the info 'located' somewhere totally different.

I know that in theory you should still be able to find them via a name search, but if you are only looking at a particular area, it might be worthwhile checking other name results.

Another idea is that maybe a page, or pages were never transcribed. Missed or not there to be transcribed in the first place?

Hope you both find your families.

I too double checked Caterham Surrey Census for 1901 via ancestry....
Found Nash family re Beechwood Rd Caterham Valley, along with
my both my paternal g/parents with their families, but no sign of Laker
family....

There are 2 parts re Caterham, Caterham Valley & Caterham On The Hill.
This I checked, as I noticed the first 2 births taking place at Coulsdon Rd & London Rd, which are both located on Caterham Hill...Again no sign of Laker family re 1901.

Wishing you the very best in your search Dorothy.

K/Regards,
A/Canuck :-)
