I did wonder if the birth wasn't registered.
I've not long spoken to my brother and he had heard the story about someone wanting to adopt our dad as a baby and also about a baby girl who had died, but once again this is all he knows so maybe the birth happened before my grandparents got married? Maybe this is why they went to America for a fresh start after they did marry?
As I said earlier it may be one of those little things that we'll never get to find out. Once again thanks to you all for trying to solve the puzzle, perhaps an answer will turn up out of the blue. I'll certainly continue to try to find out.
