Potty

Potty Report 13 Oct 2012 14:27

Sandra, scotlandspeople does have baptisms and marriages before 1855 - they are in the Old Parish Records.

As they both came from Aberdeenshire, I would think that they would have married there before moving to Stornaway but they may not have had a conventional marriage. Read the info on scotlandspeople about irregular marriages.

I agree, Mel, about naming patterns - if the baptism I posted is correct, I would have expected to have a James and an Elizabeth amongst the children.

George appears on the 1881 census but not on the 1891, so that cuts down the searching period for his death. In 1891 Jane is living with daughter Mary Ann in Cornton Vale, Perthshire.

Thank you Mel and Potty, I will get some more credits on Scotlands people and search a bitmore. This is my husbands side of the family who all seemed to have lived around Gairloch Rossshire. Thankyou again my head goes around in circles trying to go back on dates. I appreciate all your help. Sandra

There are other baptisms on familysearch for children of James Weir and Elizabeth Stuart. This 1841 census ties in with them (Jean = Jane):

Jean/Jane not with them in 1851:

1851 Scotland Census

Age: 11
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840
Relationship: Daughter
Father's Name: James Weir
Mother's Name: Elspet Weir
Gender: Female
Where born: Auchterless, Aberdeenshire
Parish Number: 173
Civil parish: Auchterless
County: Aberdeenshire
Address: Midtown Pitglassie
Occupation: Scholar

Isabella Weir 11
Elsie Weir 6

Malcolm

Malcolm Report 13 Oct 2012 15:48

SP does go back to 1530 for births. I took a look for a marriage on the year you suggested and all Scotland but there are none in the SP index. Tried separately for both her and him but no joy. Also spread out the dates by two years each way. Nix.

I've known SP to return a blank on an online search then find it on a visit to Register house so obviously the database is different.

I'll be up there in a months time so if this is a family matter Inbox me and i'll see if I can help. :-)

My husband had a researcher in Scotland a few years ago to trace back his family tree. She went back as far as George watt and Jane Weir. These are his great grandparents My Husbands Grandparents were Alexander Mackenzie and Isabella Watt Mackenzie. My husbands mother was Millicent Watt Mackenzie. Who was born in Gairloch. He wanted me to try and trace further back but it does get very muddling. Thanks for all of you help, Sandra.

Potty

Potty Report 14 Oct 2012 10:51

Sandra

familysearch has more baptisms, including one for Elizabeth in 1858 in Loth, Sutherland (same POB in 1871 census) and William in 1855 also in Loth (POB 1871 ??, Sutherland).

Jane is living in Inverness in 1901 and there is a death in Inverness for a Jane Watt with another surname of Weir on scotlandspeople between 1901 and 1911. If this is your Jane, it should give her parents' names (if known by the informant).
