Tony - RC churches were not allowed to keep official marr rego's until the 1980s.
In 1880, only C of E, jews and quakers were allowed to keep official marr rego's. A marr could take place in an RC church (if it were an approved building), but the marr would be officially recorded in the registrar's own rego.

Check again at http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk/marrcov.php and you'll see West Bromwich, Holy Trinity is C of E.

The m.cert itself will say "Married in the [Parish Church] according to the rites and ceremonies of the [Established Church]" immediately under the main block of entries and before the signatures - where [text] is filled in as appropriate.

Sorry to be so slow with my reply mgnv, but having looked a little more deeply at the west midlands site it seems to me that the All Saints and Christ Church registers are in fact C of E but the one labelled Holy Trinity is for those events deemed non conformist such as Baptist Congregational Methodist and Roman Catholic James marriage to Alice West is in the Holiy Trinity register. The introduction to the site appears to make the distinction, so i hold my belief that it was a Roman Catholic marriage. I hope i dont seem to be confrontational that is not my intent, but i think my interpretation of the text on the site is correct but i am certainly open to correction.

Tony I

Using http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk/
West Midlands Marriage indexes for the years: 1880
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
WEST Alice ISHERWOOD James M West Bromwich, Holy Trinity Sandwell Register Office 25/4/439
so that was a C of E marriage. A pre-1980s RC marr would be recorded in the registrar's own register, along with rego office and other non-conformist marrs (all non-conformist marrs pre-1898 - after that, they could be authorized to keep their own official m.regos, except RCs as I said).

Do you know who the parents of Leslie A. Wilkes (on the 1911 census) were?

Did James have a daughter? If not, maybe Leslie is Annie's grandson. His birth certificate may lead you to her name.

James and Alice are living apart in 1881. Do you have the birth certificates of any of the children to confirm their parentage. Especially Rose as she is noted as adopted in the 1911.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 6 Nov 2012 04:11

It was very difficult for anyone, other than a very wealthy person, to get a divorce back then, not just for Catholics.

Even so, many marriages broke up .............. and the partners would live apart. A large number of them "re-married" .................. ie, took up another partner and lived common-law.

Have you tried looking for Alice Isherwood in the later censuses?

James married Alice West 1880 in West Bromwich Staffordshire England My grandfather Albert West Isherwood was born from this marriage in 1882 Charles and Rose Margaret followed Since James father was married in the Roman Catholic chapel at Broughton Hall Skipton Yorks. its fair to assume James was raised in the catholic faith. This means there would have been no divorce. Yet James remarries in 1888. I cannot find any evidence of Alice West death or other departure nor,can i find any trace of second wife Annies maiden name. Can anyone help please.
