Thank you to all for your further information. I'm now in the process of following up other possible leads or enquiries that have arisen from all your comments. His age (22) together with the surname Wood, appears in the Salvation Army records, but I know that often these details were a bit vague at best. And perhaps the family got so sick of spelling or pronouncing the name Waud (if it turns out to be that) that they simply gave up and said it was Wood!

And another ps to Reggie: I'm sorry you feel I've wasted people's time unnecessarily by not giving more info. at the start. I've never posted on any GR forums before. My original post was put out as a 'feeler', and I thought I might get one or two replies, if I was lucky. Possibly none at all. So I was totally overwhelmed by the response. But instead of focussing on the sheer generosity and kindness of people, and the extent to which they were prepared to help, I'm now responding for the second time to your petty criticisms. I freely admit I'm a novice when it comes to family research and have much still to learn. And you clearly are much more experienced than I am. So perhaps a little understanding and tolerance wouldn't come amiss. This isn't a competition, so I'd be really grateful if you didn't use my general lack of knowledge of the etiquette of these forums in order to score points. Thank you!

The 1901 and 1911 censuses that Catherine has posted are both for the address 62, Spencer Road, Stoke Newington. They had a son, Frances Henry Waud.

As this is where your Frances Henry was living in 1908, it would be a huge coincidence if this wasn't your Frances Henry.

Maybe he pronounced Waud as Wood, to save confusion. Or people thought he was saying Wood and not Waud.

Mary

Mary Report 8 Nov 2012 13:40

When you view original 1911 census it deffinately says William James Copleston.

Re Francis Hy. Wood
Very many thanks for all your kind efforts and info. Much appreciated.
Relevance of 1908 is it's the year my father was born. Have just learned (source: Salvation Army archives) after a lifetime of not knowing, that he was the father of my unmarried grandmother's baby (born in a SA hospital). She (Elsie Copleston) was 17. He promised marriage but then thought better of it! And his surname seems positively to have been Wood, not Waud or Wand. No Australian connection that I know of.

Have been a member of GR for years, but not a regular visitor since I completed my basic research some time ago. Am now trying to get to grips with the new site.

To Reggie: A belated and grovelling 'please' and 'thank you'. Have also heeded your stern warnings not to click on your name, and to dutifully use the Add Your Reply box. Wouldn't dream of doing otherwise, Reggie. You sound far too formiddable! And yes, I'm in the process of searching all trees, but thanks anyway.

To all, thanks once again. Your replies have given me new food for thought, and possibly new avenues to explore.

Think that death of Francis Henry Waud in Australia in 1957 posted by Margee is probably correct.

His father was George William (William George?)
