Hi, This does not relate to the newspaper article. Could someone look at the 1861 census for John Dalton as detailed above in the 1851 census. He is still in Bedale area and I would like to know who he is with, ie Elizabeth. Thanks. (I am right in tacking this request onto this thread aren't I?)

Daily Gazette for Midddlesbrough - 5th May 1894

'An old man and a hearty handshake.

An inquest was held at Bedale yesterday on the body of Byers Race aged 78, a corn dealer of Bedale. Mrs. Winter, housekeeper to the deceased, gave evidence to the effect that on Tuesday night deceased, who was very weak, went to the Bedale Post Office. When he returned he complained that a certain person had taken hold of his hand and given him a shaking as he had never had, and it had greatly upset him. Next morning he was not very well, and he alluded again to the severe shaking, and rested himself during the day in bed. As he seemed weak, she asked him repeatedly to let her send for the doctor, but he would not allow her. After seeing him several times during Wednesday night and Thursday morning, she observed a change shortly after 6 in the morning, and she went for the doctor, who found him dead. Inspector Holmes said the doctor had informed him that he had attended deceased for a weak heart, and that the shaking of his hand had nothing to do with his death. The shaking was simply given in a friendly way. The jury returned a verdict of death by natural causes'

York Herald - 4th May 1894

'Sudden Death of a Bedale Corn Merchant

We have to announce the somewhat sudden demise of Mr. Byers Race of Bedale, which occurred early yesterday morning. Deceased, who was 79 years of age, was well known as a Corn Merchant and was generally respected. He attended Northallerton, Leyburn, Ripon, Bedale and Thirsk markets regularly. He was a most enthusiastic supporter of the Bedale Cricket Club and was present at nearly all their matches. He leaves a grown up family behind him'
