I am trying to find detail of Cecil Henry Dodd born about 1903in Cheriton who appears to have been adopted by William and Jane Court in Hawkhurst in Kent (as shown on the 1911 census) There is also an adopted sister Gladys Edna Payne. I have been able to find a birth for Gladys but not for Cecil. Can anyone suggest another channel to search or how to access adoption records. William and Jane Court are my gr grandparents. Cheers Yvonne Graham

Hi Penny,
It really is confusing as I have searched everywhere to try and find any detail about him. A little aside to the 1911 census is that my grandmother, daughter of William and Jane, was working away at the time of the census so obviously is not listed there, but always talked about her younger brother and sister Sybil and John Court. I have also not been able to find records of their birth and wonder if Cecil and Gladys are actually Sybil and John. The plot thickens.
As I live in Australia and my grandmother arrived here in 1912 I am finding it tricky to do in depth research other than the internet.
Thanks for your time and interest.
Cheers Yvonne

Thanks Vera, I had also noted that birth but have only found that he is listed as being born in Cheriton in Kent and baptised in Hawkhurst in 1905 where the Court family lived. No other details have come to light at this stage. If you can read my reply to Penny it adds a little more mystery to the story. If not let me know and I will send that info to you too. Cheers Yvonne
Hi Yvonne, Yes thanks have read your reply to Penny.Looks like Cecil and Edna became Sybil and John !!!! ???? Regarding places of birth stated on census etc., sometimes you have to take them with a pinch of salt. It would be interesting to get the birth certificate of the Cecil born Maidstone, just to see if that would help you....unfortunately thats costs....and it might not be the right one anyway. Just a thought. Regards Vera
That will most probably be my next option.
Thanks vera

Hi Mavis, Thanks for your reply. Sorry to not answer until now but it is early morning here in Western Australia and I have just picked up your message.
The Cecil Dodd I am searching for is noted on the 1911 census so with my gr grandparents so he is obviously still alive at that time. Another little piece of information that came to light is that on family search. org I found a matching name and baptism date for 1905 for him in Hawkhurst where my gr grandparents lived. I wonder if he was living with them then. On family search.org his mother has been listed as Mabel Dodd and no father listed, so perhaps she was a single mother and had to give him up.
I wonder if I will ever find out who he really was. Thanks again, Yvonne

If you look at Mavis's post she says that maybe one of the daughters on that census was the mother....One of them was a Mabel

I know it doesn't answer what you're looking for but I did find a newspaper article:
The Dover Express of 16 April 1926 carried an article about a Cecil Henry Court of Upper Deal who was summoned for riding his BSA motorcycle at dangerous speeds on a public road. He put in a defence but was fined £1 (inc costs).
