ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Helix14 Report 21 Dec 2012 23:38

Hello everyone.
Please can you help me with a really tricky Brick Wall with this pair of ancestors?
I am trying to find their death records.

Joseph Bolton & Martha Lee
Martha Lee was born about 1823 in Eccleshill, Yorkshire.
Joseph Bolton was born about 1818 in Cottingham, Yorkshire.
Cottingham is a village northwest of Hull, East Riding.
They married in Bradford in 1844.
1851 census
Person:BOLTON, Samuel
Address:8, Hardcastle Field, Bradford

Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation Where born

BOLTON, Joseph Head Married M 32 1819 Woolcomber Cottingham, Yorkshire
BOLTON, Martha Wife Married F 28 1823 Power Loom Weaver Eccleshill, Yorkshire
BOLTON, Samuel Son M 6 1845 Attends Day School Bradford, Yorkshire

1861 Census
Address 43, Valley Street
Parish Idle
District Bradford, Idle
Administrative County Yorkshire (West Riding)
Householder 1
Name Martha Bolton
Age 37
Estimated Year of Birth 1824
Relationship to Head of Household Head (widow) NB Writing is indistinct here, but I think it is a curly W.
Occupation Cotton & Alpaca Weaver
Birth Place Eccleshill (part of Bradford)
Birth County Yorkshire
Householder 2
Name Samuel Bolton
Age 15
Estimated Year of Birth 1846
Relationship to Head of Household Son
Occupation Cotton & Alpaca Spinner
Birth Place Bradford

Birth County Yorkshire
Householder 3
Name George Bolton
Age 1
Estimated Year of Birth 1860
Relationship to Head of Household Son
Occupation Juvenile
Birth Place Windhill Idle
Birth County Yorkshire

These are the only certainties about Joseph,Martha and George Bolton.
Samuel married in 1865.

I found a burial record for a Joseph Bolton aged 40:
West Yorkshire, England, Deaths and Burials, 1813-1985about Joseph Bolton
Name: Joseph Bolton
Birth Year: abt 1819
Parish: Wibsey, Holy Trinity
Burial Date: 30 Dec 1859
Burial Age: 40

but also
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966about Joseph Bolton
Name: Joseph Bolton
Probate Date: 4 Feb 1860
Death Date: 28 Dec 1859
Death Place: Yorkshire, England
Registry: Wakefield

This Joseph Bolton was an Innkeeper, and his widow was Sarah Ann Bolton, not Martha Bolton. So it appears not to be the right person.

Death of Joseph Bolton was not 1858 9b 36, which relates to an infant.

His widow Martha appears in 1861 Census with 1 year-old son George Bolton. Therefore Joseph died between the date of the Census (7 April 1861) and 2 years and 9 months before it at the most, and 2 years and 9 months before it at the most, earliest date for his Death is therefore July 1858. This assumes George is a posthumous child and nearly 2 at the time of the 1861 Census.

The 28 December 1859 death (as above) relates to an Inn-keeper whose widow was Sarah Ann Bolton, not Martha.

There is another Death recorded as below for a Joseph Bolton. This was a 2-year-old child.

Registration district: [?] Bradford
County: Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1861

I checked the most likely death record by investing in a Certificate from GRO, but they were unable to find one. See reply:
Thank you for your order as detailed below.
Death Certificate: JOSEPH BOLTON died 28-DEC-1859 in IDLE BRADFORD
We have been unable to process your application, please refer to the paragraph below.
We have searched the indexes for events registered in England and Wales during the years specified (1858-1860). We have been unable to find any entry with the details you provided.

I can’t find Martha after the 1861 Census, and that may be because she has either died or remarried. If the latter, I would have hoped she would still be living with her young son George Bolton.

I think this is an infant—from burial records.
Name: BOLTON, Martha
Registration district: [?] Bradford
County: Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1862

I noted the son George and possibly found him in the 1871 Census, living with a cousin, and presumably his maternal grandmother, Hannah Watmuff/Watmough. (This may be assuming too far and just be coincidence.)

There are 5 Deaths in Bradford of a George Bolton born 1860 between 1860 and 1871. Therefore, this cousin George has only 1 out of 6 chances of being the ancestral collateral.

Possibly her son George, is living with a cousin in 1871, in Leeds Road, Idle; he is only 11, so what has happened to Martha?

KathleenBell Report 22 Dec 2012 00:56

Have you considered that in 1861 when Martha describes herself as a widow they may have just split up and Joseph could perhaps have died later than you thought?

I must admit that I can't find a likely death for him in the timescale you give other than those that you have discounted but I can't find him in the 1861 census either.

relationship to head of household: Wife

MarieCeleste Report 22 Dec 2012 11:32

On the 1867 marriage records that Kath posted above I think there's a transcription error as there are two more brides than grooms. I think this is more accurate:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1867
BARRACLOUGH Ramoth Bradford Y 9b 154
BOLTON Martha Bradford Yk. 9b 154
BOTTOMLEY Thomas Bradford Yk. 9b 154
Stead Elizabeth Bradford 9b 154

In which case:

West Yorkshire, England, Marriages and Banns, 1813-1935

Name: Martha Bolton, of Bradford
Birth Year: abt 1822
Age: 45
Marriage or Bann Date: 14 Dec 1867
Parish: Bradford, St Peter (Bradford Cathedral)
Father's Name: John Child - labourer
Spouse's Name: Thomas Bottomley, engine tenter of Horton
Spouse's Father's Name: John Bottomley - labourer

Bride and groom both widowed and both aged 45.

Witnesses: William Holmes and Christopher Gibson

So, if "our" Martha's correct maiden name is Lee then this can't be her as the maiden name would have been Child.

EDIT: Have found Martha Child's first marriage to William Bolton in 1845 so we can definitely eliminate that 1867 marriage.

Mary Report 22 Dec 2012 12:46

George Bolton born 1859 baptised Holy trinity idle 1/5/1860 by Martha Bolton a SPINSTER!!

MarieCeleste Report 22 Dec 2012 13:05

There were three George Boltons born Bradford 1859:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1859
BOLTON George Bradford Yk 9B 155
BOLTON George Bradford Yk 9b 185
Births Sep 1859
Bolton George Bradford Yk 9b 164
Bolton George Bradford Yk 9b 59

(I think the first two records in March are the same one re-transcribed).

Could more than one have a mother called Martha?

The baptism that Mary B has posted shows the residence as "Windhill"

Helix14 Report 22 Dec 2012 23:04

Dear Kathleen, Ann, Mary and MarieCeleste,
Many thanks for your replies. I think George Bolton of the 1861 census was living with Martha Bolton and an elder brother, Samuel, who married in 1865. That removed him from Martha's household, and is why I got interested in the younger brother. I did not know about the Windhill connection in the Baptism records, and it rings a bell because the Watmuffs lived at Windhill:
West Yorkshire, England, Marriages and Banns, 1813-1935about John Watmuff
Name: John Watmuff Labourer
Birth Year: abt 1826
Age: 22
Marriage or Bann Date: 31 Jul 1848
Parish: Calverley, St Wilfred They were living at Windhill.
Father's Name: James Watmuff Weaver
Spouse's Name: Hannah Lee age 17, Spinster
Spouse's Father's Name: James Lee Delver

However, Martha's father was John Lee, not James.
Would Martha be allowed to describe herself as a widow if she was not in fact one? Why would she say she was a spinster when she got George baptised (if this is the relevant Martha Bolton)--surely there would be some social disadvantage to illegitimacy in those days, much more comfortable to be able to attribute the pregnancy to one's lawful wedded husband!

Thank you all, I am going to look into the Baptisms and will return to this thread in 2 or 3 days' time. I wish you all a happy Christmas.

MarieCeleste Report 22 Dec 2012 23:07

Martha may not have described herself as a spinster, it may have been an assumption that was made because she didn't have a living spouse.

Dear MarieCeleste and Maryb,
Thank you for your replies.
Where did you find the marriage between Hannah Watmuff, born 1781, and Thomas Lee? I have scoured one or two genealogy websites in vain!
Best wishes for a happy Christmas.
