Find Ancestors

I realise that but as I came across the info I posted it in case it was useful

I think Lisa is looking for William's ancestry, as she pointed out in the opening post she already has Catherine's ancestry and their children.

I can't find his birth with any certaintry (conflicting places on the census),and none of his relatives were with them on any census to give any clues.

According to 1861/71 census he was born a bit earlier than you originally posted, in 1810/11, and according to one of the census in Chester le Street, but this changed on the various census returns. There are just too many William Smiths in the area to be sure of a birth - at best I think it could only be a guess.

My mother's family were also Smiths, as you will have found out it's not an easy name to research :-S

Can you post up some census details for them? It's not easy getting to the right family without knowing some of the children's names.

Have you tried the Family Search website - their marriage was at St Thomas, Stockton on Tees, but neither parents named on the transcript

I have hit a bit of a brick wall finding my great great great grandfathers ancestors. i have looked on Genes and Ancestry and cannot seem to locate his parents through the records or looking at others trees.

My great great great grandfather was William Smith born in Durham in 1816, he married Catherine Howell in 1833. I have been able to trace Catherine's line back and their children but i have drawn a blank at finding his ancestors.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
