HARBIN, Alexander Gray

Hi to everyone and hoping you may be able to help me. I'm trying to find the birth/baptism of my great-great-great grandfather Alexander Grey HARBIN and the names of his parents, without any success. He emigrated to South Australia in 1840 with his wife Hannah WALL and their three children, Mary Ann, Samuel and Louisa HARBIN from Somerset, UK. Alexander and Hannah married 27/9/1830 at All Saints Church, Castle Cary, Somerset. A son, Daniel HARBIN was baptised 15/8/1831 at All Saints Church, Castle Cary and it appears he died there as he didn't emigrate to SA with his parents. Another son, Samuel HARBIN, was baptised 13/9/1835 at St Andrew's Church, Compton Dundon, Somerset. In 1831 Alexander was a labourer in Castle Cary and in 1835 was a labourer in Littleton, Somerset. He died in SA 24/12/1864 and his age was listed as 64. On his emigration application 27/2/1840 his age was 34 and the 1841 SA Census his age was in the Under 50 column. Hannah WALL was baptised in Castle Cary, Somerset, 9/12/1805.

There is a baptism on Free REG for an Alexander HARBIN son of William and Mary 16/4/1780 in Lovington, Somerset which could be him, but there is also a burial for an Alexander 24/2/1872 son of William and Mary HARBIN at Lovington, so I'm guessing this is the same person and not my ancestor.

There are records of other HARBINS on FreeREG/Census but I just don't have any more information to work with. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou.

Hi Ann, thanks for your welcome and all the information you posted above, really appreciated.

I'm not sure if the Alexander Harbin christened 16 Apr 1780 Lovington, Somerset is connected, there's a bit of confusion? As you found, this Alexander's parents were William and Mary Harbin and he could be my g-g-g-grandfather, but according to FreeREG William and Mary also buried a son named Alexander on 24 Feb 1782 at Lovington, Somerset, in which case he isn't my ggg-grandfather. But I've also seen an Alexandra (not Alexander) Harbin buried on the same date which means one of the names could be mistyped, but which?

Anyway, I'm off to check out the 1841 Census now and see where that leads me.

Thanks again.

1780 is a generation too early for the man who claimed to be 34 in 1840. He would actually have been 60

Hi Reggie
Yes, I agree that would make him too old. I only considered he was a possibility though because I had a doubt about the ages I mentioned in my inital request.
Thanks and cheers.
