Thank you Ozibird, but i'm not quite sure if it is?

In the 1891 census she reveals her name as Alice Rose, and the Alice you have identified is Alice Louisa Boyce, Jul-Aug-Sep 1855, South Stoneham.

Alice Rose Stone (nee boyce) youngest daughter was also named Rose, which would lead me to believe her middle name was Rose.

In each census she revealed her birth location as Marchwood which I beleive would come under the New Forest?

However the Alice you have indentified would be living in the same area, same age etc. Perhaps it was coincidence or Alice changed her middle name?

Thanks again for your help :-)

Thanks for the update David.

I've also had a look for a marriage but no luck. This is a tough one to crack.

Hope you have more luck with finding Caroline's grave.

Thank you Alviegal & Christina. Just to update I have received the birth certificate of Caroline Stone 1892 and all the details match. Furthermore under surname of mother is says Alice Stone formerly Boyce.

I am still unable to find a marriage record for Edward Stone & Alice Boyce between 1879 and 1883, but I’m glad I finally have a name to put next to her.

I am going to try locate Caroline Stones grave, however if these reveals no more information regarding the Waterhouse saga I may order the 1939 NI record so thank you Christina.

Christina(Lancashire) Report 7 Jan 2013 21:57

There wasn't a census in 1941 due to WW2.

There was, however, the National Identity Card in 1939. Details from these are available now (for a fee of £42) relating to individuals who have died.

Basic facts about the 1939 National Identity Card

Taken on the night of Friday 29th September 1939.

Details recorded for each person were:

Residence
Name
Sex
Date of birth
Marital status
Occupation
If member of armed forces or reserves

I hope you're prepared for a long wait David! 1941 won't be released until 2041.

Also I checked with my Nan regarding Waterhouse and she seems to remember she had a boyfriend in her later years which may have been called Arthur Waterhouse. When the 1941 census gets released I will hopefully know!

David Report 6 Jan 2013 21:35

Thank you Alviegal I ordered the 1895 certificate as it seemed to be the closest match in age, and as her mother was Alice it seemed to match. I shall order the 1892 one however it would mean her age on her death certificate and the census results would be incorrect?

Which one did you order?

Perhaps she was known as Carrie Waterhouse in later life. Did she live with a Mr Waterhouse possibly? Or maybe she had another reason to have an alias.

David Report 1 Jan 2013 23:22

Hi all thank you for your help.

I have received Caroline deaths certificate today which has my grandfather Ronald Stone as the informant. It would put her birth as 1894 but the shocker is her name is listed as Carrie Waterhouse otherwise Caroline Stone.

I have put a link below to a scan of the certificate:
http://oi48.tinypic.com/5xlm3s.jpg

Of course the birth certificate I ordered is the incorrect one, but I can’t find a Caroline Stone or Carrie Waterhouse born in 1894. There is however a Caroline Stone born in 1892?

I also can’t find a marriage certificate, and everyone in the family is certain she never married. In the census records she is only referred to as Carrie in the 1901 census but as Carrie Stone. Is it possible she was adopted?

Thanks
:-)

Deaths Sep 1881 Stone Sarah Jane 31 S.Stoneham 2c 42

David Report 27 Dec 2012 00:39

Thank you once again.

I believe they were married as Alice Stone was on my grandfathers (Caroline Stone's son) birth certificate. Also it stated married/widowed in each census and mentioned Edward was from Winchester and Alice was from Marchwood.

The certificates should be delivered imminently however I assume they have been held up due to the christmas post.

I did feel it was unusual he was still having kids at 56 but if he had re-married this would make more sense.

Thanks

alviegal Report 27 Dec 2012 00:20

There was another Edward Stone, born Portland, Dorset, 1850 who married an Alice, so that is possibly the marriage that you found.

The only other marriage I can find is Edward Stone & Alice Stone - 7 Aug 1879 St. John's, Portland, Dorset, England but there are no other details.

Maybe your Edward and Alice did not marry. I think you need to wait until you receive Caroline's birth certificate.

Thank you both for your help, it's looking very possible that he remarried.
Sarah Jane would have died when Bessie was aged just three. Would it be plausible that he re-married and had a another child with a Alice in just under a year though?

David Report 26 Dec 2012 23:55

Thank you Ann, your information confirms my suspicions that he was Edward William Stone. His grandson Edward John Stone had noted down his name was Edward John Stone and that he was in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps??

It would mean his mum is also likely to be Mary Ann Ligh/Light which I had noted down somewhere. Now to find out Edwards wife’s maiden name. I’m hoping it’s just a typo and I have found the correct marriage record.

Any more help would be much appreciated.
