There are some local indexes online for Darlington:
http://www.darlington.gov.uk/Living/Register+Office/RegOfficeSearch.htm
Surname Forename Register Entry No Year Spouse Details
SWALES Margaret RO29 172 1894 MCLEAN Richard Apply for certificate RO29-172 - [new window]

So they either marr in the rego office, or in a non-conformist church as non-conformists weren't authorized to keep officil marr rego's before 1898, so the registrar would have to attend and record them in his rego.

A church marr would have a non-RO local ref, e.g.,
SWALES Elizabeth C13/1 144 1894 COOK John Apply for certificate C13/1-144 - [new window]
but the site doesn't have a key saying which church C13 is.
