If you purchase the birth certificate through the GRO online for £9.25 it will hopefully tell you, at least, who his mother is. That way half of your problem is solved and it will help us to trace him.

Births Sep 1859 (>99%)

Roper Herbert Buch_nham Plomesgate 4a 591
Roper Herbert Buckenham Plomesgate 4a 596

I think the correct number is 596 although it is very difficult to read.

Hopefully it will prove to be the correct one.

Further research has unearthed that Emma Roper is the mother of Herbert Buckenham Roper. Born 26/9/1859. I now have a copy of the Entry of Birth. No indication of who is the father. Interesting that nothing is indicated but leads to the fact that Herbert was illegitimate we have hinted previously.

Emma Roper nee Barnes was a widow at this time from what we know. Hezekiah was living with Emma in the 1861 Census.

What we now know for sure is that we do not require ROPER research as this is not the blood line.

Comments appreciated. David

I have been researching exactly the same relative for the last year.I am the great grandson of Herbert.I am guessing that your wife is the child of Ernest and Lena.

I found the link between the middletons and Ropers is through the Barnes family.I have to check to confirm but I think Hezekiahs parents lived with Emma's family in their later years.

I would love to share our research on the Ropers.

Very happy to share the research Judith/Chris. We certainly have a connection with Herbert.

Having confirmation it is almost certain that Hezekiah Middleton is the father of Herbert Roper. However as indicated previously mother Emma Roper is confirmed on the birth registry with no father named and choose to retain the Roper name not Middleton. We now research the Middleton name as the likely bloodline as Osborn Roper, Emma's deceased husband died many years prior to Herbert being born. Hezekiah a widower lived with Emma until their deaths in 81 when Emma passed away.

Excellent to locate Chris Roper and welcome him to the extended family.

Can anybody please assist with details of Emma Roper nee Barnes?

She was born around 1811 but I cannot locate her birth at all.

Married Osborn Roper in 1829. I can locate her on the various census's but a birth and parents are proving difficult.

Cheers
David :-)

Is this connected

Emma Roper born 14/2/1812 Redlingfield Suffolk to John Barnes and wife Ann
Baptised Framlingham Suffolk Emma Roper Barnes 1/1/1836.

Edit John's wife wasn't Ann it was Mary.

Hi Mary

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated.

This may be a connection as the dob is around the same time and much of the detail is very much the same.

Framlingham is also the same area. Wher e di you locate these details please?

Emma married Osborn Roper as per below. This would mean she was married very young at 17/18. However this is not unusual at this time.

Emma Barnes
England Marriages, 1538–1973
Name: Osborn Roper
Spouse's Name: Emma Barnes
Event Date: 27 Oct 1829
Event Place: Redlingfield, Suffolk, England

Our details show that John Barnes was married to Mary Green but again all has to be confirmed.

Do you have any further information on the family at all please?

Cheers
David

Thanks Mary

Unfortunately, I am not on Ancestry. Not to worry I will keep trying. The Barnes lines is proving a little difficult.

Emma from the various censuses was born in Redingfield but confirming a date is the tough one along with her parents although John Barnes and Mary Green look a good bet.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Cheers
David

is this the marriage you have seen?

Name: John Barnes
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Single
Marriage Date: 4 Apr 1792
Marriage Place: Buxhall, Suffolk, England
Spouse: Mary Green

Agreed, further research is definitely required.

The following has already been done in Suffolk. The marriage of Osborn Roper to Emma Barnes, which took place at Redlingfield Suffolk reads as follows:

"Osborn Roper of the parish of Redisham single man and Emma Barnes of this parish single woman were married in this church by Licence this twenty seventh day of October in the Year One thousand eight hundred and twenty nine by me John Knevett Curate.
Osborn and Emma both signed
Witnesses were John Barnes, Mary Ann (surname appears to be Roper) and William Green"

BAPTISM SEARCH
We then searched the baptism register of Redlingfield (Emma gives this as her birth place on most of the census returns) for Emma Barnes between the years 1800 - 1815 no entry was found in this parish for Emma.
The only Barnes baptism recorded in the parish of Redlingfield during the above period was for a John son of John and Mary Barnes who was privately baptised there on 13th May 1804.

On the 1861 census the entry for her birthplace appears to be Bedingfield Suffolk so we also searched this parish 1800 - 1815 again no entry was found for Emma.

It does seem strange Emma being baptised in 1836 but born around 1811/12 however not out of the question.

There is another record of 1817 for an Emma Barnes but the below just doesnt seem right as the 41 census show Emma still at home with her parents. By this time she was married to Osborn.

John Barnes
mentioned in the record of Emma Barnes
Name: John Barnes
sex: Male
Wife: Mary
Daughter: Emma Barnes
Other information in the record of Emma Barnes
from England Births and Christenings

Name: Emma Barnes
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 21 Apr 1817
Christening Date (Original): 21 APR 1817
Christening Place: WITNESHAM,SUFFOLK,ENGLAND
Father's Name: John Barnes
Mother's Name: Mary

The search continues.

Not visible on Family Search or Genes Reunited from what I can see.

I am not a member of Ancestry.

Also a bit far to travel from Australia.

Thanks
