No problem, glad to have been of help.

If you let me know when/where he died I can check for a probate record. There's one for Edwin, I'll go find it again & post the details.

Oh you beauty Chris ;-) Right quarter & district.

I'll put money on it being William - I recently looked up some local parish baptisims for another member and one of the children had been given a girls name on the bmd record, Daisy - he was actually a Derek!!!

Although we don't think there's a baptism in this particular case, only the certificate could prove it.

Astra Report 1 Jan 2013 18:33

I thought this might be his death when I searched earlier but I still can't get a grasp of the Jones connection!

Name: JONES, William A
Registration district: Leicester
County: Leicestershire
Year of registration: 1964
Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 69
Volume no: 3A
Page no: 591

Flip Report 1 Jan 2013 18:44

Hi Astra, you're back, I found that too but there is no probate on-line on Ancestry for that death. I've no idea where Jones came from either - it's not turned up anywhere in his history (that I can see) maybe it was a friend's name or whatever - an uncle of mine changed his name from Smith to Henderson, he said he just liked it better!

Sarah, if they married in the reg. office there won't be a parish record so you could be wasting your time checking all the parishes. Couples would normally marry in the bride's parish, but not in all cases - you could chase your tail for days and not find anything, and I don't know that the marriage certificate is going to give you anything you don't already know, now we have found the parentage of William, and Chris has found the right DOB on his Navy record.

I'd be interested to hear if you get the Navy records, it's been quite an interesting search!

No I checked for a probate yesterday and couldn't find it.
The name change to Jones is worrying me and I think we maybe missing a vital link somewhere but the birth certificate may resolve it. Or did he just pick a name out of a hat?

Flip

Flip Report 1 Jan 2013 19:22

No, I can find no reason for the Jones name, plcked out of a hat may be the case, but the old so-an-so is keeping us guessing! Wonder if his grandmother was a Jones?

Sarah

Sarah Report 1 Jan 2013 21:11

iv know isea where the jones name comes from the story goes that the jones name came from his mother could it be mary ann name was jones before she married edwin dodge maybe

Sarah

Sarah Report 1 Jan 2013 21:15

looked for edwin dodge marriage to mary ann in somerset nothing found there

Flip

Flip Report 1 Jan 2013 22:12

But we've already posted Edwins marriage

Marriages Dec 1889 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dodge Edwin Augustus Stoke Damerel 5b 693 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Fry Mary Ann Stoke D. 5b 693 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
MELHUISH Emily Mary Stoke D. 5b 693
QUICK John Henry Stoke D. 5b 693

Which ties in with her parents names/places, who must have looked after the 2 sons.

You need to widen your search parameters - they were married in Devon, not Somerset!!

The only thing tying them to Somerset is Edwin's birth, not their marriage, abode or children!

But that's me off-line until Friday night, back to wok tomorrow - and no internet access - I'm sure someone else may be able to help with your continued searches!
