Thank you so much everyone.

If I get any further information I'll get back to you all.

Meanwhile, as it seems that Daniel was born in Northamptonshire, I'll have another go at the English censuses to see whether I can find his family. No luck last time but I think it's worth another try.

There was also a Patrick MARTIN and a Terence MARTIN living in Woodend in the early days. There are MARTIN burials at the Woodend Cemetery. Contact http://home.vicnet.net.au/~wdhs/welcome.html for research (for a fee).

This is indeed your man:

Independent, Saturday 28 May 1921
DEATHS.
MARTIN--On 14th May, at 142 Hopkins Street, Footscray, Daniel, the dearly beloved husband of Susanna and loving father of Albert, George, Frank, dearly loved grandfather of Frank, Dolly and Muriel. A resident of over 40 years.
God rest his soul.

Independent, Saturday 4 June 1921
MARTIN.
Death has removed another very old Footscray identity in the person of Mr. Daniel Martin, who passed away at his residence, Hopkins-street, on May 24. Heart failure was the cause of his death.
Born in Northampton, England, 76 years ago, Mr. Martin arrived in Australia as.a young man, and settled in Woodend, where he married. He came to Footscray 45 years ago, and entered into business as a bootmaker. He was widely known, and held in high esteem by all. He leaves a widow, and of his family of six, three sons, Messrs. Albert, George and Frank Martin, survive.
The funeral took place at the Footscray Cemetery on Thursday, May 26. Rev. J. H. Goble officiated at the graveside, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. H. King and Sons.
It is only five months since Mrs. Martin's mother died at the advanced age of 100 years and 7 months.

Is he the Daniel MARTIN who died in 1921 aged 76 in Footscray, Victoria son of Robert MARTIN & Elizabeth MARTIN (reg 5698)?

Susannah died in 1931 aged 83, daughter of Jas Randall WHITE & ? (reg 4524).

Her birth in SA:
1850 (3/12)
WHITE
Susannah
[father] James Randall WHITE
[mother] Lea Hannah (not recorded)
Adelaide

Notice from an old Footscray newspaper (NLA Trove):
Independent, Saturday 16 August 1890
FIFTY-THREE YEARS MARRIED.
WHITE-WHITE.-On the 2nd August, 1837, at Church End, Parish of Wilsdon, Middlesex, England, by the Rev. J. White, James Randall White, 20 years a resident of Footscray, Victoria, second son of William and Amy White, late of Stoken Church, Oxon., second grandson to Robbie Randall, late of Ayrshire, Scotland; also to Mr James White, of Stoken Church, Oxon., land surveyor, next brother to Robert White, Esq., late of Orchleigh Park, near Frome, Somerset, and of the firm of Crawley, White and Crawley, Grand Surrey Works, Southwark Bridge Road, London, brother to Mrs John Best, Geelong, married to Leah Hannah White, second daughter of Mr Frank and Mary White, bacon killer, of Sydenham, Oxon. (The above couple are colonists of 48 years' standing, having had to children, 48 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, all colonial born).

James Randall WHITE died in 1902 aged 86; Randall was his mother Amy's maiden name. Leah Hannah WHITE died in 1920 aged 100, daughter of Richard WHITE [?] (reg 16135). 'Oxon' is an old abbreviation for Oxfordshire.

Chronicle, Saturday 3 April 1920
Mrs. Leah White, who resides with her daughter, Mrs. T. Mateer, Plenty-road, Preston, Victoria has just celebrated her 100th birthday. Born at Sydenham, England on March 23, 1820, Mrs. White arrived in Western Australia by the ship Simon Taylor, 120 tons, in 1842. She settled in Geelong in 1862, and has resided in Victoria ever since. She had a family of five sons and six daughters, and has living over 200 descendants.

The WHITE family were actually in Geelong by 1852 (Susannah may have been born on the way over!), later in Riddells Creek and Woodend, then Footscray. She did arrive with a Richard WHITE and family so not sure if he is her father (as per informant on death reg) or perhaps an uncle (assuming the anniversary notice is correct, wchich seems more likely). See http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/shipping/simon-t.htm
[EDIT: Just found a tree online, she was a daughter of Francis & Mary; Richard who came with her to WA with his wife and family was her eldest brother]

The Argus, Wednesday 13 October 1920
WHITE-On the 12th October, at the residence of her son-in-law, T. A. Mateer, 83 Plenty road South Preston, Leah Hannah White, widow of the late J. R. White, Austin street, Footscray, aged 100 years and 6 months. A colonist of 78 years. Leaving 201 direct decendants.

Daniel's marriage in the index indicates he was born in Northamptonshire., so seems more likely his parents married there. Susannah was born in Adelaide.

Children:
Daniel b. 1869 Woodend, d. 1869 aged 16 days
Amy Maria Elizabeth b. 1875 Footscray, d. 1877 aged 1
Albert b. 1878 Footscray, d. ?
George b. 1881 Footscray, d. 1925 Melb East aged 45
Frank Trojan b. 1884 Footscray, m. Florence DOWLING 1906, d. 1965 Croy aged 82

They also had a son named Martin WHITE in Woodend in 1867, father not stated, mother Susannah WHITE (reg 11930). He died aged 2 in 1869 as Martin MARTIN.

This is George's death notice (from NLA Trove):
The Argus, Saturday 10 October 1925
MARTIN -On the 7th October, at Melbourne Hospital, Brother George Martin, Wor. Mas. Elect. (Interred 9th October, Fawkner Cemetery)(I.O.L. No 111, Essendon.)

Do you know when Daniel and/or Susannah died? Have you found his family in the 1851 and/or 1861 UK Census? If you don't have the marriage certificate it may be worth it as Aussie certs are usually very detailed. You can order an uncertified image online for A$20.

I believe Robert Martin was born in Northamptonshire and he married someone called Elizabeth. However, I can't find a marriage for them and wonder whether they married in Australia (Victoria, possibly).

Their son, Daniel Martin, married Susannah White at Woodend, Victoria on or around 28 May 1867 but I am not sure whether they were born in Australia or England.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, please, especially as far as Australian connections are concerned?
