Hi, I'm looking for a James Lang born circa 1860 in Glasgow. In particular his milary history. I think he may have served in Canada. Would appreciate help from anyone with access to information relating to this...

Many thanks

Do you have any evidence to suggest he served in WW1 given how old he would have been

He doesn't seem to be there.

If he was born 1860 he must have been MUCH older than your father! When was your father born?

Edit: Oops sorry, gt. uncle so your grandfather's brother?

Margee,

Thanks so much for this, just realised that I'd put the wrong year of brith he was actually born 1885 and not 1860....I have had a good look and there's one possible that may be my Man....

He would have been a bit old to serve in WW1 if he was born c1860.

What other information do you have please? Do you have his date of birth? Who were his parents? Did he emigrate to Canada?

Margee

Margee Report 10 Jan 2013 14:51

But that one does sign his name Laing not Lang.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 10 Jan 2013 14:55

My thoughts too Margee and the names are pronounced differently. Laing is usually pronounced as "Lane". with the "g" almost silent.

Anne

Anne Report 10 Jan 2013 16:17

The family originated from Ireland where it's thought to have been Laing.....The name changes around the time of his birth and I've proof that some of the family used Laing and some used Lang......Strange but true!

James Laing 334839 d 5/2/1951 in London ON
See: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/006003-110.01-e.php
You want:
Title: Veterans Death Cards: First World War
Microform: lacey_a

If you take the "Search Help" link on Margee's URL, it tells how you can purchase a copy of his WW1 service record, then knowing which unit he served in and when, there's also a link there to that unit's WW1 War Diaries.

I think Anne that before you go buying that record or trying to find Mrs. Scott's maiden surname, you need to find the exact date of birth for James Lang / Laing if you don't already have it. Then you will find out if it corresponds to that given on the enlistment record for James Laing.
