I can only see that it says Elsie Macdonald on that shipping record with Ronald and Jean,no K initial.
Going back to his war record and the page 10 of 11 where it says wife Amelia,if you look above her name isn't that his correct info of the places he served in?
I had also seen on his enlistment that he had no next of kin.

The document “report on wounds or other injuries, received otherwise than in action” shows some other possible background to LGGs desertion. 46355 Gunner L Granville was admitted to hospital on 8th Feb 1915, suffering from fracture of jaw. It is noted that the disability was of a serious nature, but “will not” interfere with his future performance as a soldier. LGG claims on this form that his injury came about during the performance of his military duty at the time of the accident, and it is signed 20.3.1915, at station Cosham. The Cosham Hospital record also shows his admittance on 8.2.1915, and discharge on 20.3.1915.
The paymaster document of 30th March 1915 shows the Cr balance of 18/- 6d for 46355 Gunner Granville LG, was accounted for in the casualty pay list of June 1915, for 37 Co, RGA .
Record of the declaration of the court of inquiry assembled at Fort Blockhouse on 23rd April 1915, assembled for the purpose of investigating absence without leave from his duty, and deficiency if any in the Arms, Ammunition, Equipment, Instruments, Regimental Necessaries or clothing of 46355, Gnnr L Granville, 37 Co. RGA. This court declared that 46355 Gunner L Granville, 37 Co, illegally absented himself without leave at Fort Blockhouse, Gosport, on 30th March 1915, and that he is still so absent, and that on 30th March 1915 he was deficient, and that he is still deficient of the following arms and equipment (there lists general service items) .
Hence...slight tremor and dodgy teeth ???

Hi MarieCeleste
Ive got a photo of him as Hector in his Black Watch uniform and also as Lionel in his RGA uniform. Also Ive been able to compare some of his handwriting, and as well as that, the addresses he uses on various forms also tie in.
"Hector Lionel MacDonald enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corp, in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey aged 27 years 120 days, a short service with colours of one year. This gives a birth place of Ross-shire, Scotland, occupation, journalist, unmarried. It also gives up his service with the 9th Royal Highlanders Black watch Regiment, service number s/8663, rank Sargent, from which service he was de-mobbed on 6th March 1919. The date of this re-enlistment was 21st November 1919, service number 50219. This records former service in the “highlanders” which was allowed for qualifying service for pension 2 years 227 days, and 3 years 327 days as sailor. Date of discharge on this document is 20.11.1920, and the address documented here is 73 Merton Road, Wimbledon, SW. Hector declares no next of kin on this record.

Welcome back William!
I've been looking at those military records and comparing the physical characteristics:
Lionel George Granville was 5' 11" tall, weighed 130lb in 1915. Fair complexion, hazel eyes and dark brown hair. Scar on right elbow and mole in centre of back.
Hector Lionel Macdonald was 5' 10½" tall, weighed 141lb in 1919. Fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair. Defective upper teeth and a slight tremor.

Thanks all.....Ive got all that info....., except the Colin H Macdonald connection...thanks very much for that....Ill look up the directory for IoM, didnt think of that one.....Im hoping that GR will throw up the family....I fear that they were born overseas though, probably in Kenya.
I understand Hector was a chemist at the Kakamega Gold Mine (or one of them) He disappeared fairly soon after his marriage to Elsie (marriedjanuary 1921 and departed for Kenya March 1921.
There maybe a Canadian connection too...he certainly laid down plenty of false trails...but then again, he had to, deserters weren't well thought of, even though he finished the war a hero.
Thanks for all your help friends
(btw I'm a returnee to GR, having been in the Ancestry wilderness for a while :-D
