Hi Marie Celeste, Kathleen & Ann,
Many thanks. It was my mistake Emily is the mother I have the birth certificate for Thomas.
In relation to John Kenward I have found this so far:
1871 Census - there is a John born approx 1860 with parents John (1834 & Elizabeth)
1881 Cencus - John born 1860 a nephew staing with William & Jane Fuller, to which I have found no connection)
1891 Cencus - John born 1862 Lighterman in 91 South Street. I do believe that this is the correct John as the family names match and the occupation is correct.
1901 Cencus - John born 1862 correct family names and Thomas appears aged 8. As suggested I will attempt to get the marriage certificate and go from there.
I really appreciate your help. Many thanks Mark

Mark, the surest way to trace John back is to order a copy of his marriage certificate, all the details are given above. The certificate should (if he knew him) give his father's name and occupation.

I've deleted the second 1891 family that I posted as the first one is probably correct as MarieCeleste says.

The first of the 1891 census that Kathleen posted must be the correct one.

Hello Mark, it often helps us to work back from a known fact, such as a census record. What census do you have Thomas born 1893 on?
I found this 1901, but the mother is called Emily?

Can anyone help me? I am looking for my Great Grandfather John Kenward who was born and lived in Lewes East Sussex. In 1882 John Kenward married Elizabeth Vaughns and my Grandfather Thomas was one of their children born in 1893. My problem is that in the various Cencus that I have searched I find several John Kenwards, and cannot identify the correct person.
I think the John I am looking for had parents John & Elizabeth. There is another John with parents James & Jane who I think I have ruled out!
Does anyone have any suggestions or think they may be related?
Many thanks Mark Kenward
