John Charles is my great grandfather and his birth details are taken from the census records. I have tried unsuccessfully to find his birth records so that I can apply for his birth certificate and therefore start to confirm the ancestors I think I have found. I've tried all the usual websites, Freebmd, Chesire's bmd records, Familysearch and of course Genesreunited. If anyone can suggest how I can obtain this birth certificate I would be very grateful as I am at a dead end.
Additional Information - John Charles married Ann Brookes in 1867, registered at Wolstanton Registry Office, Stoke on Trent. He died in 1907. His father was William Bentley.

Geoffrey,

Although civil registration began in England in 1837 it was not until 1874 that it became compulsory for births to be registered. Consequently many births went unregistered. If your ancestor was one of those then I'm afraid that you will not be able to obtain a birth certificate for him.

Researching:
Don't put off until tomorrow doing what you can do today. If you like doing it today you can do it again tomorrow.

Perhaps he was born before parents married so could be registered under mother's maiden name.
