mgnv, Reggie,
Thanks for responses and help. I've now had a more thorough look at the certificate (the one I've already got is for 1922).
The sub district is also Shipston on Stour.
There is no comma, the entry reads as 'Moreton Campden R.D.'
I thought this might have meant Moreton, in the sub district of Campden But this wouldn't make sense as there is also a sub district called Moreton - so it would presumably have been Moreton, in the sub district of Moreton.
Any idea if Moreton can be taken to mean 'Moreton in the Marsh'?
Regards
Paul R

Is there a comma between 'Moreton' and 'Campden'?

In the header of a b.cert, there's a bit that says "Births in the subdistrict of ______"

Now, Shipston on Stour RD has had subdistricts for Blockley; Campden; Halford; Moreton; Shipston on Stour. I don't know which were operating in 1916, but if both Campden and Moreton were active, your b.cert would help pin down a bit where the birth took place.

In general, a look up of any event in, say death of a John in 1837 Shipston on Stour on FreeBMD, gets a hit like:

Deaths Sep 1837 (>99%)
AINGE John Shipston on Stour 11 288

Now click on the "Shipston on Stour" link, then the more info "here" link to see info abt Shipston on Stour RD.

Maddie, MarieCeleste &brummiejan - many thanks indeed for your help and suggestions. As you can probably tell, I'm a bit new to this!
Yes, Shipston on Stour is the registration district and includes the parishes of Moreton in the Marsh and Chipping Campden but no sign of 'Moreton Campden''.
Family tradition is that the birth (my father) was in Gloucestershire in or near Stowe on the Wold. But in the 1920s, Stowe on the Wold appears to have been a separate registration district, so this adds to the mystery as the registration was in Shipston on Stour!
There was a brother born in 1916, probably in the same place (definitely recorded in Shipston on Stour District), so I think I will order that certificate and see if the place of birth is recorded differently. I will also see if I can find a local history society as brummieja suggested.
Many thanks again - Regards Paul R

Welcome to the boards Paul.
The reg dist is Shipton on Stour.. My personal opinion is that it is just a slight error or as you say the local expression inuse for the general area between the 2 places.
Have you looked to see if there is a local history society/forum where you can ask?

The registration district from the birth index might help. That means we could then see what parishes were covered by that district.

Could anyone help with local knowledge for the Chipping Campden/ Moreton in the Marsh area please? I have a birth certificate from 1922 that gives the place of birth as Moreton Campden. I have been unable to find this on maps or by Googling. Does anyone know where it was/is or if perhaps it was some sort of local 'short-hand' term for a more general area?
Many thanks
