Find Ancestors

Hi, I have been trying for ages to find a death for Henry. I have found him living at 86 Casewick Road, Norwood with his wife Maud in 1919 on the London Electoral Rolls. However by 1925, it is only Maud who is living at the same address. She lived there until around 1937, sometimes with both of her daughters, Betty Marriot Robinson and Nancy Louise Bethell Robinson, and sometimes with just one of them. Before she died in 1946, she had moved to 35 Cambridge Park, Twickenham. She died in hospital in January 1946 and her death certificate shows she was the widow of Henry James Powell Robinson - a clerk. So far I cannot find a death between 1919 and 1925, or up to 1946, and haven't found a Probate Record. Can anyone help me with this please. Both his daughters are now dead, without children, so this line has now ended. Henry received The Freedom of the City of London in 1890, having completed an apprenticeship with the Worshipful Company of Coopers. Don't know if that helps. Lyndersgreen

Hi, I also found a person in the Australian Electoral Rolls in 1916, but having been unable to find him travelling to Australia, and then nothing further in Australia, I guess that this is a person with the same name as my relative.

It is definitely the right person living with his wife Maud in 1919 at Number 86 Casewick Road, Norwood. She was at the address without Henry from 1925 and lived there at least until the late 1930's. Both of her daughters lived with her at different times. She also had a telephone at that address. As for whether Henry could have died in Uxbridge in 1926, I suppose he could have, although I am missing him from before 1925, unless he was in a hospital. Maud or his daughters would have known his full name, although Maud went by the name of Mrs. H. Powell Robinson in the phone books. So I am still looking, but thanks everyone for the information.

It is such an unusual name to follow so I wouldn't rule out the Australian one just yet.
Could that be him, I would doubt that the passenger records would reveal much for WW1 period, there were no further children born after 1911?
Maud may have listed him in 1919 if she thought he was coming back, but also would she have been able to vote if she didn't say he lived there?

Having not found a death for him in the UK, but his wife is registered as being a Widow, may indicate that someone knew or simply stated that he had died.

I have seen a death where a lady is registered as "wife of" simply because she had been deserted 60 years ago as a young women and no one knew what had happened to her husband when she died.

The Uxbridge death you mention, is that because it was the right age?

had another look at the Australian Electoral records. He appears to be living with Annie Eliza Robinson at the same address and is a Waterworks employee. The record is for Western Australia and the next set of records for the state appears to be 1925, so not much use in trying to follow the person.

Is there a Marriage in Australia for them?

I can't see a marriage in Australia. There is a death record for Annie Eliza Robinson in 1957 age 85, but no way of knowing if same person.

A Henry Powell ROBINSON died in Western Australia 13/11/1922 aged 50...only afew years off! However this report in the newspaper gives his age as 54 - and states he leaves a wife and 2 children in England!

Sudden Death in the City.— While on duty in Beaufort-street this morning, Constable Symes noticed a man collapse opposite the police station. The St. John ambulance was summoned, and removed the man to the Perth Hospital. Upon arrival a doctor pronounced life to be extinct. The body was subsequently identified by Inspector Ward, of the City Council, as that of Henry Powell Robinson, a dog inspector in the employ of the council. Papers found on the body give deceased's address as 450 Hay-street. Deceased, who was aged 54, was a returned soldier, and had not been in good health for some time. It is believed that Robinson leaves a wife and two children in England. Inspector Ward stated to-day that deceased had been with the council for about three years, and had proved himself a most efficient officer.

These are his Australian army records - which confirm

he married Maud Hancock in February 1903.
Her address in UK - Lombard Restaurant, Lombard Court, London EC
He was apprenticed in England as a Printer with a 6 year apprenticeship.

At the time of his enlistment he was a meter reader (probably still with Perth City Council).

He was interred at Karrakatta Cemetery (see MCB WA). Annie Eliza is in a different plot altogether so may not be connected.

Last Monday an old man named Henry Powell Robinson collapsed on the foot path in Beaufort-street, and died while being conveyed to the hospital in the ambulance. Robinson had been trusted officer of the City Council for several years and had won the respect and esteem of a host of municipal employees. His wife and children in England wil lament their loss.

('Old man' at 54?! How rude! ) :-P

Thanks very much everybody. I had tried everything to find him. Henry was my mother's uncle, the eldest child in the family. I found out what had happened to Maud, Henry's wife, and his 2 daughters, who both died in the late 1990's in Colchester, Essex, England. Sadly they lived not very far away from me, and had I had known about their whereabouts, I might have contacted them.

So the London Electoral Roll for 1919 showing Henry living with Maud in 86 Casewick Road, Norwood might not have been accurate, unless he came home for a visit. Strangely enough, Henry's father, also Henry, died suddenly aged 62 years, suffering from 'Apoplexy for 2 hours' which I think was a stroke.

I have now looked at Henry's records with the Australian Imperial Force, which I found very interesting. From the cause of his being discharged with arterio sclerosis, it seems a similar condition to that of his father.

Now I want to see if I can find the report in the newspaper and maybe something else on the burial place.
