Mark, why are you suspicious of the dates? - they are taken from actual records.

I agree that Thomas Corby Empson is a different person, I only posted that record because of the similarity in dates, obviously just a coincidence.

The address in the newspaper article I posted and that on the 1795 baptism could strengthen the link between Thomas and James.

The naming pattern is quite a common one.

Mark Report 12 Feb 2013 09:28

The information that I have goes back to information passed down a generation or two.
I am prety happy about the Thomas Empson and Suzannah Ware, this has come from multiple sources.
The Dates for Thomas are also coming from a number of family sources, but the James/Mary Empson are probably more suspect.

I do not believe the Thomas Corby Empson is the same Thomas, although the dates are very close. Makes me suspicious of the quoted dates.
There are definite records of the marriage of Thomas and Suzannah and the dates stack up.

Thomas Corby is recorded with a different spouse, so I believe a different Thomas.

I am suspicious of the dates for Thomas, and also the parents of Thomas. Hence I have been looking for info on James to see if there is an obvious link.

It is interesting, and perhaps relevent that the son of Thomas and Suzannah is also a Thomas and in one census only, he is recorded as James, so I assume that he was a Thomas James possibly. This would provide a posible link to a grandfather called James.

There is a tradition in my family, that the eldest born son is a Thomas. I am a Thomas also, as was my father, so I am known by my second name Mark.
I do not know what caused the tradition and am curious to find out.

Best regards, Mark.

The Ipswich Journal of 1 November 1800 published a list of national bankruptcies, included was a James Empson, a painter of Fetter Lane.

Ties in with 1795 baptism above.

Hi Mark, you'll always get a good response on here!

You say your Thomas was born 1796 but AnnCardiff has posted a birth for 1789. Where did you get 1796 from? It's always possible that they had a child called Thomas who died (note the one in 1789 was baptised early) and then re-used the name.

Mark

Mark Report 12 Feb 2013 06:10

WOW
What a fantastic response. I did not expect to get much out at all, but you have all done so much, thank you!!

I am decended from a Thomas Empson 1796 - 1824, Married to Suzannah Ware in 1819 in Harrow London.

Thomas was decended from a James Empson and Mary Empson and I am trying to find the link there.

I will follow all your suggestions and see what comes out.

Best regards from Christchurch New Zealand.
Mark Empson.

The 1782 marriage image is on Ancestry.

Additional details

Mary Binley was a Widow, James a Bachelor
Witnesses John Jones and William Burgess.

All parties could sign their names rather neatly which implies they may have been literate.
