First post!
I am trying to find the parents of Elizabeth Preston who married Thomas Yates 12-5-1806 at Nottingham St Nicholas. I have a copy of the marriage P/R entry which states Elizabeth of the parish of St Peter, Nottingham.
Any help appreciated.
Toby.

Welcome to the boards Toby.
Where did you find the marriage record? Was it on Familysearch site? You can see there are 2 candidates, baptisms on different dates but same names for parents! No way of knowing if yours obviously.
It is always possible that these are the same parents who had a child which died, and they named a 2nd daughter for her, not uncommon at the time:

name: Elizabeth Preston
baptism/christening date: 03 Aug 1783
baptism/christening place: St. Peter, Nottingham, Nottingham, England
father's name: Joseph Preston
mother's name: Mary

Thanks for your replies. The information I accept. The one thing I would like to prove is are they the correct parents as there are other Preston families in Nottingham. When Elizabeth and Thomas have some thirteen children none of them is named Joseph which puts doubts in my mind.
Do you know of any way to prove parentage?
Toby.

There is no way I have found to prove parents.

Names are often repeated over and over in families though. So you might find the first two children are named after their grandparents. There used to be a formula for this, as in -first son named after fathers father, second son after mothers father, etc.
Have you plotted the children for the couples siblings , this might reveal a pattern of names.
Sometimes trades and aprentiships were also in a family. Weavers for instance often worked together at home., in the same location or a small factory there in a weaving shed in the village.
Hope this helps.

I agree with Margaret on names and occupations.

Maybe could eliminate the family with Joseph Framework and Knitter) and Mary There are records of 3 other children baptised ie Joseph, Sarah and George.
