RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the Saint Lawrence River abt 15 km NE of Rimouski following a collision with the Storstad, a Norwegian collier, in the early hours of 29 May 1914. Of the 1,477 persons on board the ship, the accident claimed the lives of 1,012 (840 passengers, 172 crew). The number of deaths is the largest of any Canadian maritime accident in peacetime.

Another coincidence is that the Empress of Ireland sank 2 years later with the loss of over 1,000 souls.

From FMP, there are 1962 folks with the name Yates going to Canada, between 1900 to 1922

If you don't subscribe to FMP or Ancestry, if you give more details on names, birthplace & location, im sure it can be looked at.
