Find Ancestors

I have the will and probate for a man named PERSHALL MASSEY, (gent of Liverpool) who died in June 1765.

I have not been able to find the burial place for him. Can anyone advise please.

In his will he named a few people- since he seems not to have married or had any children at his death.

Firstly he leaves £10.00 to the Methodist Chapel in Liverpool,

Then his two sisters, Elizabeth Evans, & Dotothy Frodsham of Liverpool.----
These three were all born in Rostherne parish Cheshire The two brothers are not listed, but may have died before...

Then the following benefit- Jonathan Eccleston, George Evans, Maccarty Dennis, & Massey Dennis, John Hope, Sarah Massey, Alice Derbyshire, Thomas Evans, Dorothy Marsh, The women appear to be widows.

Not seeing Pershall Massey, there is a Percival Massey but he is a labourer not a gentleman.

Since Pershall bequeathed money to the Methodist Church you could contact them.
They may be able to point you in the right direction.

Thank you for that info. I saw the Percival Massey entry and it seemed possible , especially if he was known as Perce , I suspect he may have been buried in A Methodist grave yard in Liverpool , but i have not found any records for those.

I shall -as you suggest try the Mehtodist address yougave,. esopecially as he left them money.

The Will metions a piece of cloth which is to be devided into 5 pieces, so perhaps he was a dealer of some sort.
He is named after his great grandfather Sir John Pershall of Staffordshire. His father being the youngest of several sons of an entailed estate. Thsi generations seems to be husbandmen, cordwainers, and other trades, so i guess the land and money ran out.
They all seem able to read and write though, but perhaps the village school there in Rostherne, was very well supported.

This might explain why he is listed as a labourer? especially as he was not of that congregation?
What do you think? The dates seem so right.

The date seems spot on.
The death of a gentleman at that time may have made the newspapers.
Maybe worth checking the newspaper archives.

Cannot think of any other way of checking if Percival is the correct person.

I have found in my searches that sometimes the clergy have written a note against the birth record for marriages/deaths. Maybe worth a look at the parish records for Rostherne.

Pershall Massey's grandmother was a Bridget Pershall and there is an indenture of marriage of 1648 before the marriage to George Massey of Moss, Audlem.Cheshire ---At Checkley, Staffs.
The last of their sons, born just before George died at 30, was Richard, father of Pershall. - Richard died in 1748 at Rostherne
He left .John, Jeffrey & Pershall.

Interesting about the Pershalls. They held lands in Viginia and ships to transport the tobacco,, all sequested at some point in the civil war. Seems they always had money problems!
