Thanks to Mel Fairy Godmother, trailertrash and Marie Celeste again for help. I'll check out the Ann Matthews connection and have sent for the marriage certificate for James and Charlotte (his second wife) as they are my great grandparents. I can only access a limited version of Ancestry at the library so haven't seen the Australia and USA info. I did have James death details from BMD thanks. Hope to be able to get further back once I find out who James' father was.

There's more than one tree on ancestry UK with similar info (copied from each other). They have a son for James called Joseph Platts, apparently born 16 June 1828 in England, arrived USA 1855 and died Lawrence County, MO, USA in 1907.

Have checked USA records and there's nothing to substantiate this, also there is no mention of a Joseph on the 1841, just the 2 daughters.

The trees do have a death notice for James' death 1877 but they have no spouse details. Would be dubious of accuracy.

There is a tree on Ancestry.com with your James Platts in it, but no parents shown. The tree owner is in Western Australia...

There is also a copy of the death notice in 1877 for James Platts..

Were you aware of these?

This could very well be the birth record of his daughter shown on the 1851:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1841
Platts Mary Jane Sculcoates 22 498

Getting that certificate would confirm the name of his first wife.

Thanks to Marie Celeste, Potty and Londonbelle for speedy responses.
The newspaper archive looks interesting for the first marriage and I think Potty is probably right that I will have to get the 1854 marriage cert for James and Charlotte to make further progress as it is their parents I need to find out about next.

It may be a coincidence (no S on surname), but found this in the newspaper archives:

Hull Packet - Friday 4 July 1834
Marriages.

Yesterday week, at Sculcoates Church, Mr James Platt to Miss Matthews, eldest daughter of the late Mr Matthews of Aldboro'

Have found him all censuses back to 1841when he was living with Ann. I think you will have to get the 1854 marriage cert for his father's name to be able to go back further.

Got stuck at great grandfather - James Platts c1804-1877, married twice, first to Ann then in 1854 to Charlotte Brown. They lived in Sculcoates then Myton. Any help please? I don't live in the area so can't access local records. Thanks.
