I'm at a complete loss with William

Margaret Report 25 Feb 2013 09:36

I am trying to sort out the above William Chandler b. 1814 Devizes, Wiltshire (according to 1851 census). He is listed with wife Mary b. 1806 Devizes and offspring Julia 1832, George 1836 and William T 1845 all born Devizes but living Paddington, London. By 1861 Mary is described as a widow. That is as far as I have got. I cannot positively identify William on 1841 census, neither can I find a marriage or death for him. The trouble appears to be that there are several William Chandlers having been born in Wiltshire and as I have no idea of his parents christian names, I am at a loss. Has anyone any ideas how I can pin this gent down ? Thanks.

Yes MarieCeleste - the 1861 is how I discovered that there was a daughter Julia. I have tried tracing William via Julia but have made no progress. Thanks for trying to help

MarieCeleste Report 25 Feb 2013 10:23

Looks like Julia could be a stepdaughter going by that 1841

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 25 Feb 2013 10:25

The most likely scenario is that Julia is Mary's daughter from a previous relationship rather than Williams daughter.

Remember that ages of those over 15 were rounded down so Mary could have been as old as 29 in 1841. N.B. in 1861 Mary is recorded as being born c1808.

Its a case of take your pick regarding William Chandlers death but I am guessing that he is likely to be one of these:

Deaths Dec 1853
Chandler William Kensington 1a 77
Deaths Mar 1856
CHANDLER William Kensington 1a 4
Deaths Dec 1858
Chandler William Kensington 1a 22
Deaths Mar 1861
CHANDLER William Kensington 1a 6

Unfortunately all occurred before age at death appeared in the index.

I've had to be away from computer for a short while as other half arrived home for a quick coffee so have only just seen the information from Jonesy - what a star. How on earth you found all this is beyond me as I have spent ages and ages. Thank you so much - I am sitting here grinning like a cheshire cat. A multitude of thanks to Jonesy and MarieCeleste.

I may be digressing a bit I thought I'd follow up the two little "nieces" (that term can sometimes be used for other relationships) on the 1861 to see if they gave any clues. Found this:

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906

Name: Emily Battie
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 29 Jul 1860 (born 28 Nov 1859)
Father's Name: William Hawksworth Battie - Chemists assistant
Mother's name: Julia Battie
Parish or Poor Law Union: Paddington Green St Mary
Borough: Westminster
Register Type: Parish Registers
Address: North Whey Road

The 1861 census was taken 07/04/1861 so the birth date of 28/11/1859 fits the 16 months on the census.

On the actual image of the baptism the surname Battie has been written over another name and I'm pretty sure that name was West.

I also think the North Whey Road on the baptism is the North Wharf Road as on the 1861.

Looks like Julia had a child and then returned home.

EDIT: There's loads of info on William Hawksworth Battie, he married Margaret Wagstaffe in 1849, had lots of children and died in 1876 (still married to Margaret). So he wasn't in a position to make an honest woman of Julia but at least acknowledged paternity.

If anyone else wants to take a look at that 1860 baptism and see what the surname is then it might tie the 1861 census to the 1841 even more.

Looking at the original image of Julia's wedding it was actually 15 May 1853, not 1st.

Hmm, so did she have a bit of a "holiday" from the marriage?!
