She is my paternal Grandmother. Born in 1886 in Sunderland. She married John George Wood and lived in the Felling/Walker area of Tyne & Wear. Trying to locate her death certificate. Thanks

Do you have any idea of when she was last known to be alive or where

On 1911 census living with Casey family

Do you know when John died or if she remarried

Thank you for responding. The information I have is very sketchy. I only found out her name within the last month. Lots of family secrets that no one wants to share. I found her on the 1911 Census as a visitor at her brothers - I think it was her brothers. John left her for another woman (and I dont know if they divorced and I was told she died at about 36 years old of a broken heart)! All but one of her children were put into 'care' in Scorton. Her last address was in Walker, Tyne & Wear. My father was born in 1912 - I'm grasping at straws really!!

Do you know the date of birth of the last child born. I'm familiar with the North East but never heard of Scorton. Do you know where that is.

Have looked at both Casey and Wood for Gateshead, Tynemouth and Newcastle registration district but not finding a death for a Mary Ann.

If it is the same one Scorton is in Yorkshire south of Darlington.

Yes Scorton is just off the A1 near Catterick. I am unable to find a death certificate either hence me asking for a bit of help (I am new at this).

My father was the last born on 21st June 1912 William Wood therefore he does not appear on the 1911 Census.

If all else fails I will go to Kew in Lodndon to the Archives Office when the weather gets better and search there. Given she was born in 1986 she must, despite all the romantic notions of a broken heart - be dead now.

The place my father was in was run by The Brothers - monks. I emailed them but got no response so will be telephoning to chase it up.

I understand there were step brothers born to the 'other woman' name also unknown and again walls go up when information is asked.

My cousins father told them not to look into their family past , but I was not included in that conversation and anyway the more I am told not to the more I'll look!

I have a mountain to climb but will keep going. ;-)

Thank you Irene.

I'll take a look at South Shields deaths also which includes Hebburn and Jarrow and extend the dates.

Have looked at all areas of Tyneside and nothing coming up for a death for the age you suggest for Mary Ann. There are a couple for Durham North and Durham West but then they were much older.

Maybe you can glean a little bit more info from family before your trip to Kew but it must have been a painful history for them.

Thank you so much Vera for checking. I may /may not get anything else from 'upt north' but will see if my cousin can help on that one. He gets the wall put up when he asks so it may just end up being foot work and of course when I got up to Gateshead later this year I may be able to check parish records if I have no luck before.

I am eagerly awaiting the marriage certificate (probably another 10 -14 days to wait). I'll update you if anything new come to light on the back of this. Thank you again :-D

I'm not sure why its going to take so long for the certs to arrive but if you have not done so already remeber always to order from this site. You can do it online. Cost £9.25 including postage. You need name/s, registration district, volume and page when ordering.

Maybe they were having to do a search for you.

Thanks Vera I am learning as I go along. I ordered from another site and did give the references you said. They were considerable more expensive so will remember that for next time (of which I am sure there will be many)!

Thank you for your help once again :-D
