How do I find my half brother who(according to family gossip) was sent to canada at the age of 9 sometime before 1932. I am now 70 so it may be his children I am looking for! He may have been called Arthur or Edwin Midgley

Hi Val again,

Hi Val - You can claim for the medal, if you can prove next of kin. I did this for my father's medal in November 2012. Had a card to fill in to send to the m.o.d. and i should receive the medal in 3mths - 6mths time.

Regards ;-) ;-) ;-)

When I in UK & my cuz in Aus applied for our fathers war records it cost £30.
They were sent with an address to collect duplicates of their medals. Free of charge they are here with me - grandson says they are for him when I'm dead.

I remember the originals in a draw when I was a child so they are definately duplicates.
Nobody asked us about being a next of kin - we proved were were the children thats all. Though claiming the medals we were told that they would only be given if no other family member had collected them.

If nobody gives you the address to claim I'll fish out the info tomorrow - bit late now
:-D :-D :-D

WW1 Medals were issued with name and number but WW2 Medals weren't.

Hi
Sorry can I just jump in on this, some medals were "taken" from our house when I was younger so I can't remember much about them, but wondered if the medals have the owners army number & name on ref Janets post?

I think all medals were automatically sent to recipients after WW1 but not after WW2 which is why they can be claimed now. My husband and I have our grandfathers' medals from WW1 but had to send for our fathers' from WW2.

You can only obtain WW2 and later medals, only if they weren't claimed.

If your father's medals were never claimed the next of kin can send for them. I sent for my father's and my husband did the same with his father's. I don't know about grandfathers' or further back. I'll send you details if you want them.

I googled my great uncle's navy number and name and an advice of a sale came up.quite by chance

Brother and I put in an internet bid and bought them for £120 :-)

If they didn't hand them down through the family, I doubt very much that you can.
