Find Ancestors

Looking in from across "the pond" & have been watching this thread from the start. I too agree with all that have posted re this subject & thank you for doing so.
Quite often I pop in, usually well after UK hours & to see if I can help out with any queries re Canadian content....& have seen some of those very curt & abrupt replies! Left me thinking OMG & cringed at the very thought as to how those, who had all in good faith posted their queries were left feeling? Many a time I considered posting a reply, but thought better of it, for fear of reprisal in the event, that I too in the future may require some help with with family research. I really feel for those, who have been treated in such a manner & most likely will not return for help. Perhaps certain people, should take into consideration, there are members just starting out with family history, including the use of computers & their given ages! Not everyone is computer savvy & neither are they guru's of genealogy! I know I sure as heck was'nt & still learning!

One thing I would like to add, we've mentioned taking the rude posters to task, but we have to be careful that we don't end up with an argument on the requesting posters thread - that would scare them off even more.

If someone has been abrupt or aggressive I try to post something a little friendlier straight after it.

Seriously though, I agree with what Cynths and others have said - I do try to explain to people why they should not duplicate a request etc. - I remember when I was new and knew nothing !!

I asked silly questions and didn't give enough info and so I remember what it was like.

There are a very few people on here who have no consideration for 'new' members and can be very harsh with them.

This is quite wrong !! - We were all new once and we should all remember this and try to help rather than chastise.

I thoroughly agree with the OP, and congratulate her on having had the courage to start it.
As others have said, people often don't protest for fear of some sort of reprisals.

As the one who seems to me to be the main Board Policeperson hasn't contributed to this thread, let's hope that means the message has been received.

But we were all there once.....

I can well understand your frustration Ann.

Sometimes I look at the whole 'tone' of the message and wonder if the poster may have some difficulties or limitations and so try to adjust my reply accordingly.

I remember my post several years ago. It was a bit rambling and had no breaks in it. A kind member told me how I should have set it out, which I did not understand at first. If he had been abrupt with me I probably would not have not still been here.

I didn't understand my threads either. I think it was Ricochet (remember him? ) who explained that.

I do try to answer clearly but I do, like Patchem, try to make it as brief as possible. I don't mean to sound abrupt and hope people do not take it as rudeness. I do try to remember to say 'please' when asking for more info.

What frustrates me is when we ask questions which are not answered or a response is posted which shows they have not actually read all the replies properly.
