Where's my Grandmother??

Paul Report 10 Mar 2013 11:01

Hi all.

I have exhausted all information and sources in a bid to find my paternal Grandmother in the 1911 census.

Info: Mary Jane Patrick b. 05 Aug 1891 in 58 Bransford Road, St John's , Worcester.

I know she was living in Great Malvern in 1901 and, having checked Kelly's Directories for 1930' she was still there but I just can't find her in 1911. I've checked under her full name, also under Mary Patrick and Jane Patrick to no avail.

Now what do I do????

Thanks

Paul

Hello Paul, do you have any idea who else she may have been with in 1911? Can you give us details of the 1901 so we can work from that?

Might she have been married by then?

I can see Sarah in 1911, but Mary/Jane not with her.

Hi MarieCeleste.

I know that she gave birth to my father out of wedlock in 1922. She married my grandad (my dad's natural father) in 1936 in Upton, Worcs.

She had one of those relationships with her mother whereby they were inseparable and yet, in 1911, her mother is listed as living with her sister just round the corner and no child is mentioned. Sorry if this is a bit vague!!!

Paul - I gather Sarah was Mary Jane's mother and was with her own sister Phoebe on the 1911? A single woman probably wouldn't have been expected to complete the "number of children born" column on the census return.

They don't make it easy for us, do they?!

Hi Flip.

I think our posts crossed!!!

I know she lived in Lower Wilton Road, Malvern, in 1922.

The 1911 shows her mother living in Wilton Road (which adjoins Lower Wilton Road). And yet, according to Kelly's Directory, Mary Jane was in Lower Wilton Road in the early thirties... I just can't seem to find her in 1911.

Correct!! Sarah was Mary Jane's mother.

"A single woman probably wouldn't have been expected to complete the "number of children born" column on the census return"... that's a theory I missed!!!

Really appreciate your input. Sometimes it just needs another pair of eyes doesn't it??!!

Its possible that she is away from home in service somewhere.
I've family from the same area and some of the girls are servants in Birmingham.

I notice that Sarah Patrick is with the Watmore's from 1881 and was there with George in 1891 and 1901. I wonder if Mary Jane took on the name Whatmore?

Paul, was your father William Henry? If so, do you have his birth certificate - I think it;s recorded under Patrick with mmn Preece.

If this is right, where on earth did Preece come from - any idea?

Sorry for the delayed response (lost broadband connection for a few hours)!!

I do have Dad's birth cert. The "Preece" name has been one of mystery for many years.

If you look at my thread "My Dad's Infancy is a puzzle" you will see that I had a tonne of help on here. I think that thread was eventually solved. Preece was the maiden name of my great grandmother's mother!!

Don't ask!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Thanks again for your input.

Could you post up a link to your other thread so I can see what was found, when I search for that it just comes back to this thread.

Although this is not getting us any nearer to finding Mary Jane in 1911! (I've already looked under Preece without any luck)

I guess you already have sarah's father's probate, but just in case:

Jesse Patrick
Probate Date: 25 Jan 1905
Death Date: 4 Jan 1905
Death Place: Staffordshire, England
Registry: London, England

Admin granted to Mary Bowler (wife of George Proudlove Bowler) and Sarah Jane Patrick (spinster) - effects £545 11s 6d.

Mary Bowler was Sarah's sister, married in Aston 1892.

However, looking at earlier census for Jessie - his wife was Jane, but freebmd has his marriage to June Preece - so a mistrancription somewhere?
