Yes. They have cost me a fortune over the years, mainly through my own curiosity.
It would have saved me a fortune if I´d paid attention to what I was told.
Thanks to all for your help.

I guess the best bet is to send for the full Will and see if it makes mention as to 'how' Mary Ann Pilkington fits with the family

Dont you just love your ancestors!

Haven´t got a copy of the will Reggie. have just seen the probate entry which grants probate to nellie Firth wife of Edwin Firth & Mary Ann Pilkington, Spinster.
As I remember, there was quite a debate when Nellie died over who should inherit the cottage & eventually I believe it went to some distant cousins.
Think my mother had high hopes, but she was only a niece by marriage. :-(

How did Robert describe Mary in his Will?

wisechild Report 6 Apr 2013 15:57

Tell me about it. I had wondered whether she was farmed out to another family & grew up with their surname.
Pretty sure she was alive into the 1970s because Uncle Ted (Nellie´s husband) died in 1969 & I know the two old ladies outlived him by a fair few years.

No I couldn't either but then she could be hidden away in a convent school or somewhere. People were quite good at hiding their mistakes.

Could well have been Gins although that would make her far too old to be the lady I remember. She was still fit & active in the late 1960s & I´m fairly sure she didn´t die until the early 1980s.
Don´t you wish you had taken more notice of what you were told as a child?.

edit.
No Not Robert´s sister. She married & became Caunce.
Astra, I had been thinking along the same lines as you.
Both of Robert´s wives were quite mature when he married them. Think Mary Ann Lea was about 28, so she could easily have had a child before marriage, but can´t see young Mary Ann Lea on the census.

My G aunt Nellie Pilkington was born 1902 in Rufford, Nr Ormskirk. Have her with her father & step mother on the 1911 census, her mother Mary Ann Lea having died in 1906.
Robert Pilkington then married Ann Baldwin in 1907 & they had no children as far as I can see.
Nellie married Edwin Firth & they lived in her father´s cottage Runner Cottage, Holmeswood Nr Ormskirk & Auntie Mary lived with them. We visited quite often in my childhood & I remember asking who Auntie Mary was & being told she was Auntie Nellie´s much older sister (around 10 years if I remember correctly)
Robert Pilkington left the cottage to Nellie & Mary in his will which is why they all lived together, as Mary never married & Nellie & Edwin never had children
Can´t find any trace of Mary Ann on any of the censuses, nor can I find a birth or death for her under the name of Pilkington, so am wondering if she was a step daughter of Robert rather than a daughter.
Can anyone shed any light please?
